  • VERY Thorough Historical Study of an Amazing, Muti-faceted Personality. A-

This is the first comprehensive biography of one of the most unsung explorers, anthropologists, and spies who has ever lived. Few people of this century know about him...yet, had it not been for his tireless, relentless explorations of people of social groups around the world, we would have virtually NO understanding of what makes people from other cultures than our own Western Civilization tick. He was able to immerse himself, chameleon-like, as a "native" of socieites the world over...It is from him that we learn the secrets of culral life in The Middle East (lessons which are INVALUABLE in today's Global Economy, as well as interactions with the people who sell us the oil we need to keep our electricity flowing...), South America (Brazil in particular, from the point of view of its ...

  • CAPTAIN SIR RICHARD BURTON

A book about I believe one of the most fascinating characters in European and Midle Eastern Histories. Burton's obsession with understanding and mastering everything about the cultures in which he lived allowed hin greater insights into the Moslem and Arabic worlds. His mastery of 29 very difficult languages, for an European is exceptional. The book gave me a better and more accurate understanding of who the people in the middle east are, why they behave as they do, and what we can expect from them. I recommend this book to anyone trying to make sense of Afghanistan and Iraq today.

  • see above

I felt it did not expand much on the other titles written about the life of Richard Burton.I would still recommend others to read it so they can evaluate

Do a quick, easy review of Richard Burton, (not the actor), first and then read this book. He was truly amazing.

  • Excellent!
