Metzger references the 1440 variants used in the abovementioned Greek transcription, but only comments on about 600 sources for variants. • Metzger's textual commentary on the Greek NT, 1st edition

Metzger's textual commentary has become a commonly-cited reference in scholarly discussions, being the only readily-available source in English that describes both the extant variants and the Greek New Testament editors' logic in deciding between readings, yet written in standard English with many Greek phrases translated. In order to keep the volume a convenient size, Metzger eliminated more than 200 entries from the first edition, when incorporating about that many new ones in the third edition, making both volumes equally valuable.
