More than 100 years ago a war broke out between our Galaxy Union and the Empire of Lone. Over time the war spread throughout almost half the galaxy. The Empire, backed by massively hellish weapons, has diminished the Union's armed forces considerably, placing it in an extremely precarious position. The Empire's main base and five major planets (Hydra, Gorgon, Seiren, Haides and Ellis) are hidden by a Hexa-Cloaking-System and protected by Killparos, a Remote Intercepting System, that can destroy anything in the vicinity. Facing almost certain defeat, the Union unleashes the Fire Leo 3 (codenamed Styx), a starfighter that is small enough to avoid enemy detection, yet powerful enough to cruise at four different speeds and pick up and carry a number of powerful weapons (such as twin shots, backfire, shields, force field claws and ultrasonic waves). To restore peace to the galaxy, you must pilot the ship through all five major Empire planets and the Planet of Empire Lone, blasting and avoiding hordes of enemies as you go. The stages in this game let you fly over, through, and around several types of terrain, including a virgin forest, lava, water, craggy holes, and ice. At the end of each stage, you'll face one of the following giant bosses: Gargoyle, Twin Vulcan, King Fish, G-Lobster or Mobile Fort. Each boss has a vulnerable spot somewhere on its body. Project Thunder Force III is underway! See if you have what it takes to rid the universe of the evil Empire!

Typically not too picky with my game collection but sunfaded box art does bother me. The problem with my purchase is that I received sun faded box art while the picture was of a regular colourful item that did not match. I reached out to the seller but no resolution option was offered. Which is unfortunate cause I’ve bought from this seller before and it’s been typically a good experience. I think some more care could go into their photos of their products.

Only for shooter fans
Incredibly frustrating one hit deaths. Cheap deaths that you can't see coming that are unavoidable unless you have already played the level. To me, this is bad game design. Complete memorization and trial and error is not fun for me. All it does is make me angry. It's designed to make you angry. The only thing I liked about this game was the music. And the graphics are good for their time. This is considered one of the easiest shooters out there. If you're a shooter veteran maybe. If you love old school shooters or "shmups" you'll probably think this is a classic though. But not me.Incredibly frustrating one hit deaths. Thunderforce 3 retro goodness
My girlfriend gave me this game as a Christmas gift, and what a gift it was. This is one great horizontal shoot 'em up on the Sega Genesis. Excellent cover art, a rockin soundtrack, and the ability to switch between up to 5 weapons at a time makes this game one of my favorite shmups on the system. Even with then new generation shooters coming out for the Xbox 360, I still find myself making time to play this great game. I can't wait to dig my claws into the 4th installment, Lightening Force!My girlfriend gave me this game as a Christmas gift, and what a gift it was. What can you say about this game really? It's one of the better shmups (shoot em' ups) on the genesis next to it's sequel Lightening Force/Thunder Force IV and other shooters like M.U.S.H.A. The gameplay is similar to games like R-type in that it's a horizontal shooter but it has it's own style to differentiate from the pack. The soundtrack is rather good and the graphics are impressive for it's time. If you're looking for a great genesis title to pick up and you're a fan of the genre I can't recommend Thunder Force III enough.What can you say about this game really? Very fun and challenging shooter
As an earlier reviewer noted, this game is not easy. However, for those who appreciate a challenge, this is one of the finest examples of the side-scrolling shoot-em-up genre. Yes, memorization and repetition is required, but that's standard design practice for this genre. Most of the games in this genre are actually quite short and can be beaten in less than an hour if no mistakes are made. You get your money's worth by having to play through multiple times, memorizing and getting better at the levels as you go. Those who appreciate a good challenge will have a blast with this game. The visuals and audio are excellent, and the play control is top-notch. A must play for shooter fans! As an earlier reviewer noted, this game is not easy.
