Synopsis
"Complementary" therapies such as acupuncture, aromatherapy and spiritual healing are now being offered within many oncology and palliative care settings. Benefits of improved symptom control, quality of life and patient satisfaction have been demonstrated, but various questions remain. Is further integration with mainstream medicine desirable? What are the priorities for service provision and research? Are the specific techniques as important as their shared "holistic" context? Can they have significant unwanted effects? And besides making patients feel better, can they help to improve survival from cancer? Such questions are considered in this book. Jennifer Barraclough, former director of psycho-oncology at the Churchill Hospital in Oxford, has assembled specialist contributions from oncology and palliative care, complementary therapy, general practice, healthcare planning and research. Academic reviews are balanced by personal accounts from patients. The book is relevant to all stages of the "cancer journey" and includes a chapter on childhood cancer. This overview of a controversial and evolving field will interest those with professional or personal involvement in oncology or palliative care., Complementary therapies are increasingly used in the care of cancer patients, the terminally ill and for respite care of children and there is an increasing body of research in the field. This book looks critically at the use of complementary medicine in palliative care, evaluating the different approaches and, where appropriate, discussing the integration of these therapies into conventional care. This volume should prove valuable to both the cancer and palliative medicine markets. This title is intended for healthcare professionals in oncology and palliative care, palliative medicine trainees and clinicians, MacMillan nurses, palliative care physiotherapists and all other professionals involved in the multidisciplinary team care of the hospice/community based teams., The book includes a varied selection of chapters by contributors from different perspectives: mainstream healthcare professionals, complementary therapists and cancer patients themselves. Part 1 provides a general overview of the field; Part 2 describes a selection of specific therapeutic approaches; Part 3 considers their use within different settings.

- 6***t (480)- Feedback left by buyer.Past monthVerified purchasePurchasing form this company can at times be frustrating due to items never arriving, very low shipping time and the inability to track the items. But I gave them another chance and purchased many maps and books over the past few months and have received all of them. Last year, it was hit and miss. All items were in the condition as described. Packaging is minimal. The only downside is extremely slow shipping. I rate them a C+. Nothing to gloat about but eventually you will get what you wanted.
