FEAR ITSELF by Walter Mosley
I'd been having some vision problems that make reading uncomfortable, so I've been turning to AudioBooks to help me through this rough patch. Walter Mosley is an author that I can't recommend highly enough. I'm a big fan of his Easy Rawlins series, so I looked forward to this one that introduced me to Fearless Jones, the toughest man in LA. This AudioBook is read by the well-known actor, Don Cheadle, who does a great job presenting the story and uses his voice to create several well defined characters. Nice job, Don. Mosely uses a curious device to tell the Fearless Jones story by focusing the narrative on Paris Minton, a mild bookseller in east LA who finds himself in a situation that requires some dependable backup---enter Fearless. The story takes the listener through the back alleys ... I'd been having some vision problems that make reading uncomfortable, so I've been turning to AudioBooks to help me through this rough patch. The story takes the listener through the back alleys of segregated LA of the 50s to the home of a black cosmetics millionairess that owns a priceless piece of history of blacks in america. This story could have been written by Dashiell Hammett, had Hammett been black and 20 years younger. The dialogue *pops* and the plot at times, makes you shout out loud at the cd player. I look forward to listening to another Fearless Jones book soon.
