About this product

Product Information

Sherman's March is the vivid narrative of General William T. Sherman's devastating sweep through Georgia and the Carolinas in the closing days of the Civil War. Weaving together hundreds of eyewitness stories, Burke Davis graphically brings to life the dramatic experiences of the 65,000 Federal troops who plundered their way through the South and those of the anguished -- and often defiant -- Confederate women and men who sought to protect themselves and their family treasures, usually in vain. Dominating these events is the general himself -- "Uncle Billy" to his troops, the devil incarnate to the Southerners he encountered. "What gives this narrative its unusual richness is the author's collation of hundreds of eyewitness accounts...The actions are described in the words, often picturesque and often eloquent, of those who were there, either as participants -- Union soldiers, Confederate soldiers -- in the fighting and destruction or as victims of Sherman's frank vow to 'make Georgia howl.' Mr. Davis intercuts these scenes with closeups of the chief actors in this nightmarish drama, and he also manages to give us a coherent historical account of the whole episode. A powerful illustration of the proposition put forth in Sherman's most famous remark." -- The New Yorker

Fast shipping, packaged perfectly with care, excellent communication, and great assistance. Item was listed "very good", but was in excellent shape. I used to borrow this from the library as a kid, been trying to buy an excellent copy as an adult. Decided to randomly try my luck again with searching and behold I see this listing with pictures of the actual product. Seller was awesome with providing additional images, and very helpful. Thanks so much!

  • Sherman's March

This is the kind of book that once you start reading it, you can't put it down. When reading this book, you can actually feel the anxiety, fear, excitement and horror of Maj General Sherman, Union Troops and the Confederate citizens. I cannot imagine that something like this happened in our history. There is a lot of arrogance of Union Generals (Not Sherman, but Lil Kill for one) and of Confederate Generals and some of the South's citizens. The descriptions of the destruction of the cities of the south are very detailing as well as the suffering. As a Civil War Buff, I highly recommend this book.

  • An easy read that makes Sherman's relentless march come to life.

There is a certain fascination for me about the American Civil War and of one of its more colorful union generals--William T. Sherman. Many books on the Civil War are little more then a descriptions and accounts of battles, leaving out the soldier and civilian experiences. Sherman's March thankfully was not one of these! An easy read, it was one of those books that was difficult to put down, and leaving the reader begging for more. The reader can actually experience how Southerners, in the wake of Sherman's relentless march to the seas felt. The same was true for slaves who for the first time saw Yankees who were leading them to freedom. The stunning climax ending with the parade of union troops in Washington D.C. and of Sherman' years after the war left the reader with a certain ...

  • boring book on great subject

Boring and written to a middle school level. Not for serious history buffs.
