About this product

Product Information

This sequel to CHINATOWN opens in the postwar boom of 1948 as developers rapaciously exploit the natural resources of Southern California. With his small, dingy practice expanded into a thriving operation, Private Investigator Jake Gittes (Jack Nicholson) is now a card-carrying member of the bourgeoisie and engaged to be married. He still does a divorce case occasionally, however, and it is just such a case that draws Gittes into a complicated web of intrigue and corruption involving the mysterious daughter of the dead Evelyn Mulwray. When the husband of an adulterous wife (whom Gittes is investigating) murders his wife's lover, it first appears to be a simple crime of passion. But as the case unfolds, it turns out that the victim was actually the husband's real-estate partner, and the murder may have been committed in order to gain control of a lucrative property development. In his effort to solve the mystery, Jake is forced to reexamine the painful events of his past--specifically, his love affair with Evelyn Mulwray.

  • Chinatown it's not -- but almost as entertaining.

Unusual characters, intriguing plot. You think you know where it's going at first, then it takes a surprising twist. Jack Nicholson reprises the detective character he played in "Chinatown" but only in some respects. The ending is a blast -- literally.

  • See Chinatown and then see Two Jakes -film noir at it's best

Nobody does cool like Jack He is unbeatable in this film and what a terrific follow-up to ChinaTown. If you wanted to get the feel of gritty LA and the PIs of the 30s, 40sand 50s - see this film. It also provides a polished up telling of the history of LA and San Fernando Valley. Remember, LA was not only Tinsel Town. Buy it and enjoy it in the comfort of your own living room.

  • Sequel to Chinatown was a long time must for me!

Wanted the rest of the story of Chinatown. Quite impressed, as the movie had the clarity of newness. Better than the average copy.
