About this product

Product Information

The first book in the critically acclaimed New York Times, USA Today , and Publishers Weekly bestselling Gemma Doyle trilogy, the exhilarating and haunting saga from the author of The Diviners series and Going Bovine . It's 1895, and after the suicide of her mother, 16-year-old Gemma Doyle is shipped off from the life she knows in India to Spence, a proper boarding school in England. Lonely, guilt-ridden, and prone to visions of the future that have an uncomfortable habit of coming true, Gemma's reception there is a chilly one. To make things worse, she's been followed by a mysterious young Indian man, a man sent to watch her. But why? What is her destiny? And what will her entanglement with Spence's most powerful girls--and their foray into the spiritual world--lead to? "A delicious, elegant gothic."-- PW , Starred "Shivery with both passion and terror."-- Kirkus Reviews "Compulsively readable." --VOYA A New York Times Bestseller A Publishers Weekly Bestseller A Book Sense Bestseller BBYA (ALA/YALSA Best Book for Young Adults) Iowa High School Book Award Garden State Teen Book Award Pennsylvania Young Reader's Choice Award

Shipping was fast but no tracking and worst packaging ever.. like the box came banged up... send a question to seller never had a reply 😅.... Good product overall, excellent price, fast shipping, wrapped only on 4 sides out of 6, no tracking and never reply... 4★ product / 2★ seller ✌️

The book is in perfect condition, brand new, and is exactly as described. This item is difficult to find here, and the seller priced it very reasonably. It shipped from the UK to Canada, and unfortunately took a little longer to arrive than the seller hoped, but it was shipped less than 24 hours after I purchased. When I contacted the seller, they were very responsive and helpful. I would not hesitate to purchase from this seller again. Definitely recommend!

  • A Great and Terrible Beauty

This is a good book, not great but good. It's part of a trilogy and I'm anxious to read the second one now. You would have to like books about magic and the super-natural to enjoy this book. I enjoyed watching Gemma develop her friendships at Spence school and watching her grow. It has some interesting twists and turns that the reader will enjoy. Though I bought this book in the youth section at my local bookstore, as an adult, I found it very enjoyable and think most adults would.

  • An excellent book

I bought the book because I had bought the last of the three and cant start at the end of a story. I honestly wasn't reading it in the beginning for enjoyment , but rather to read the one I was so looking forward to. There was no way, however, not to enjoy this book. Especially , if you are a female, you find a great humor even in the story. It is really inspiring, I think , as well, for younger girls to reach out and be who they want to be. Gemma, the girl in the book , lives in a time where women were expected to be one certain way, and she did not care so much for that way, but rather for the way that made her happy and comfortable. I loved this book. I was very happy that I made the purchase.

  • mysterious fun

I loved the mystery and adventure the girls all got into. Gemma is a young girl like so many others yet she has a secret, who doesnt want to find out more about someones secrets? I am in my 20s and loved the escape from textbook/ course work reading. Anyone 12-50 could find great pleasure in this book they just need to let their mind free. I am very excited to read the next book!

  • It was just what I ordered :) nice packaging.

  • a great and terrible beauty

It was a good book begining to end. It kept you wondering. I thought it was good reading and the timeline was interesting, girls back then had few choices in how to lead their lives. You were either stuck married to someone your family picked out or you taught school. So it really opens your eyes to the struggles of young girls back then.
