About this product

Product Information

Creativity is crucial to business success. But too often, even the most innovative organization quickly becomes a "giant hairball"--a tangled, impenetrable mass of rules, traditions, and systems, all based on what worked in the past--that exercises an inexorable pull into mediocrity. Gordon McKenzie worked at Hallmark Cards for thirty years, many of which he spent inspiring his colleagues to slip the bonds of Corporate Normalcy and rise to orbit--to a mode of dreaming, daring and doing above and beyond the rubber-stamp confines of the administrative mind-set. In his deeply funny book, exuberantly illustrated in full color, he shares the story of his own professional evolution, together with lessons on awakening and fostering creative genius. Originally self-published and already a business "cult classic," this personally empowering and entertaining look at the intersection between human creativity and the bottom line is now widely available to bookstores. It will be a must-read for any manager looking for new ways to invigorate employees, and any professional who wants to achieve his or her best, most self-expressive, most creative and fulfilling work.

Product is 95% alike picture but a little more blurry. Controller play well but had a notice from psn that my joypad wasn't authentic and could by problematic🤷‍♂️ no trouble so far! Shipping was fast but no tracking and worst packaging ever.. like the box came banged up... send a question to seller never had a reply 😅.... Good product overall, excellent price, fast shipping, wrapped only on 4 sides out of 6, no tracking and never reply... 4★ product / 2★ seller ✌️

The book is in perfect condition, brand new, and is exactly as described. This item is difficult to find here, and the seller priced it very reasonably. It shipped from the UK to Canada, and unfortunately took a little longer to arrive than the seller hoped, but it was shipped less than 24 hours after I purchased. When I contacted the seller, they were very responsive and helpful. I would not hesitate to purchase from this seller again. Definitely recommend!

  • The most creative human being I've ever encountered

The publisher's description of "Orbiting the Giant Hairball" seems better designed to dissuade you from buying this extraordinary book than to help you understand why it is a must-have! Gordon MacKenzie, who died too young, was one of the most creative human beings in captivity. The self-designated "Creative Paradox" of Hallmark Cards, Gordon delighted in showing colleagues how they could stretch the limits of creativity, while continuing to work in a typically bureaucratic, perhaps creativity-stifling corporation. I doubt that he ever said it this way, but his motto might have been, "Be creative as hell -- just not quite so creative that it gets you fired!" His book is loaded with wit, humor, insight -- oh, insight galore! -- and story after story, and example after example, of how to ...

  • In essence it addresses the false corporate mindset , individualism and the need for for work life balance plus promoting creativity.

I have recently retired ... from about 40 years in the high tech corporate world and have only read the first 6 or so chapters ... the ideas ring true and the delivery has me giggling. The main thought is ... what difference did it make working all the extra hours and on weekends which has to do with the "hairball" philosophy ... only to be told at the end of the day that "what we did was not valued" ....

  • Great read!

I found this book to be very enjoyable to read and looked forward to sharing and discussing the author's thoughts and ideas with my fellow art friends and students - who are now also reading this book. The author writes with wisdom from his work experience at Hallmark. He is a very creative man with a wonderful sense of humor and adventure. I felt encouraged to step out of my own inhibiting box and see my creative life in a new light.
