    Sigma's EX version lenses can't be beat for the occasional, serious photographer.

    When ultra-wide zooms first came out from third party lens makes, they were limited in range and somewhat slow with apertures. This lens changed the game. You went from the usual 19-35 or 18-35 range. to a 17-35, one of the widest starting points for non-brand lens makers. Next to the 20mm the 17mm in single focal length was probably the next most used, but in this one you get a zoom that starts off at 17mm and to boot it has a f/2.8 aperture. (Granted when you zoom to the 35mm setting it goes to f/3.5. But think about this, you have an f/2.8 17mm, instead of the usual 20mm f/2.8. Another plus is that this is one of Sigma's EX version lenses. Built to professional standards.
