About this product

Product Information

This volume presents George Chapman's original 1611 translation of Homer's epic poem "The Iliad". The text makes only a small number of modifications to punctuation and wording where they might confuse the modern reader, and provides an introduction, textual notes and a commentary. A preface explains how Chapman tapped into the poetic consonance between the semi-divine heroism of the Iliad's warriors, and the cosmological symbols of renaissance humanism.

Reviews
"Nicoll's gently modernised edition of Chapman's Homer [is] a work to be admired, bought, even read right through. . . . This cheap reprint of a scarce and very good edition of a great work is a thing to be welcomed." --Colin Burrow, London Review of Books, "Chapman's versions inspired English poets for centuries after his time. They rest on a minute and perceptive reading of the texts. And they retain their power to fascinate and provoke anyone interested in Homer and his afterlife, in Renaissance ideas about classical and modern poetry, or in the development of the language of English poetry." 'e"Anthony T. Grafton, Princeton University, Nicoll's gently modernised edition of Chapman's Homer [is] a work to be admired, bought, even read right through. . . . This cheap reprint of a scarce and very good edition of a great work is a thing to be welcomed. -- Colin Burrow, London Review of Books, "Oft of one wide expanse had I been toldThat deep-browed Homer ruled as his demesne;Yet did I never breathe its pure sereneTill I heard Chapman speak out loud and bold." 'e"John Keats, "Nicoll's gently modernised edition of Chapman's Homer [is] a work to be admired, bought, even read right through. . . . This cheap reprint of a scarce and very good edition of a great work is a thing to be welcomed."-- Colin Burrow, London Review of Books, Nicoll's gently modernised edition of Chapman's Homer [is] a work to be admired, bought, even read right through. . . . This cheap reprint of a scarce and very good edition of a great work is a thing to be welcomed., "Chapman's Homer provided for the Iliad and the Odyssey exactly what the King James Bible (also published in 1611) did for the Hebrew Bible and the New Testament in English: it offered a stylistically vigorous and morally powerful translation that has influenced generations of subsequent readers, even as new versions have proliferated." Product is 95% alike picture but a little more blurry. Controller play well but had a notice from psn that my joypad wasn't authentic and could by problematic🤷‍♂️ no trouble so far! Shipping was fast but no tracking and worst packaging ever.. like the box came banged up... send a question to seller never had a reply 😅.... Good product overall, excellent price, fast shipping, wrapped only on 4 sides out of 6, no tracking and never reply... 4★ product / 2★ seller ✌️

The book is in perfect condition, brand new, and is exactly as described. This item is difficult to find here, and the seller priced it very reasonably. It shipped from the UK to Canada, and unfortunately took a little longer to arrive than the seller hoped, but it was shipped less than 24 hours after I purchased. When I contacted the seller, they were very responsive and helpful. I would not hesitate to purchase from this seller again. Definitely recommend!
