Stages of Cancer Development explores the evolution of cancer from a single, genetically altered cell through all stages of development to a potentially fatal disease. Cancer begins with a loss of control over cell division, or hyperplasia. Genetic changes in cancerous cells lead to an excess of cells and to a disruption of their organization, a process called dysplasia. In the next stage, carcinoma in situ, the growing tumor is more aggressive but is still confined to the location where it first began to grow. The transition to an invasive malignant tumor-where the cancer cells begin to invade more deeply into the tissue of origin-may then follow. At that stage, the tumor is at risk of spreading throughout the body in a process called metastasis. Understanding how cancer begins and develops is vital to understanding the disease.
