Tom Hanks and a giant, slobbering dog - how can you go wrong?

A better-than-average light comedy with Tom Hanks playing his great. likable self. There's an old axiom in Hollywood never to work with dogs or babies, and the dog in this film nearly steals the show. This "Dogue du Bordeaux" (or French mastiff) has such an expressive face that you feel his emotions in every scene. According to his page on IMDB, this was the first and last appearance of this canine actor. I hope that he and Hanks enjoyed making this film as much as I enjoyed watching it. SPOILER ALERT****A warning to parents watching with young children, there is a gratuitous heartbreaking ending about 5 minutes before the last scene (wherein a bit of the heartbreak is mitigated) but it makes me cry and curse the writers every time I watch it; young children (and dog lovers) will need ...

  • Full of humor

Helps to have owned a big, slobbery dog as I did! Tom Hanks is great as usual, lots of wit and such situations he has to contend with! He has to change his rigid ways, finds love for both beast and human. Ends as you expect, light, enjoyable movie.

  • "What A Good Film"

Tom Hanks and Hooch made this movie something to remember. Loved It! To be able to have a Dog like Hooch and to see his look-alike puppy at the end with Mr.Hanks scolding him out like He did when Hooch entered Tom's Home for the first time. A must see for all.

  • How can you go wrong?

Like I said in the review title: how can you go wrong? Tom Hanks and his K-9 companion make you want to go out and find your own dog that chews and slobbers. It's not often that you see a dog in a movie that really has a connection with the actor(s) that he or she performs with. On top of that, Tom Hanks is a great actor and he's one of the few actors that completely sells his character. I also really like Reginald VelJohnson. If you're a fan of Family Matters, then you can't help but like any part he plays.

  • A Funny Movie of the Old Fashion Kind

This is a young Tom Hanks before he grew into the gravitas that maturity has brought. The story of a young police detective trying to solve a crime while caring for a very large, drooly bulldog is hilarious. If you ever wondered if dogs had a mind of their own, this film will answer that for you. No matter what this young man does, the dog has its own agenda. This film goes in a retrospective with such young Tom Hanks films as "Big", "Joe and the Volcano", "The Bachelor Party" and even the very early "Bosom Buddies" tv show which introduced us, lifelong, Tom Hanks fans to this wonderful actor.
