About this product

Product Information

A bold new adaptation of the 4,000-year-old Egyptian poem about Warrior King Sinuhe that captures the essence of civilization and the complexities of immigration, from the Booker Prize-winning author. Forced to flee Egypt, Sinuhe is captured as a prisoner of war by the foreign Kingdom of Retenu. Stripped of status and tormented by memories, Sinuhe will need great force of will to survive as a stranger in an unknown land. But can he transcend the mysterious powers of Egypt and the tribulations of exile? With two actors incarnating a multitude of characters, Ben Okri's play recreates one of the world's first known stories, a timeless tale about the strength of the human spirit.

Reviews
"In this new adaptation...the ancient story of the warrior king Sinuhe is brought to intriguing new life." -- The Telegraph "Fascinating...Fans of Egyptian history, short stories, and plays and those with deep philosophical questions will enjoy this text. Often triggering thoughtful retrospection and occasionally offering surprising splashes of humor, Okri's play is recommended for readers who have questioned their place in the world." -- Library Journal Praise for Ben Okri: "Okri is a master in knowing what is better left unsaid...each word chosen is vital." -- Los Angeles Review of Books "Ben Okri is that rare thing, a literary and social visionary, a writer for whom all three--literature, culture, and vision--are profoundly interwoven." --Ali Smith "Fiction's master of enchantments stares down a real horror, and without blinking or flinching, produces a work of beauty, grace, and uncommon power." --Marlon James "I love the mythical, fablelike quality of his stories. There is something very comforting and ancient about them." --Alan Cumming, Praise for Ben Okri: "Okri is a master in knowing what is better left unsaid...each word chosen is vital." -- Los Angeles Review of Books "Ben Okri is that rare thing, a literary and social visionary, a writer for whom all three--literature, culture, and vision--are profoundly interwoven." --Ali Smith "Fiction's master of enchantments stares down a real horror, and without blinking or flinching, produces a work of beauty, grace, and uncommon power." --Marlon James "I love the mythical, fablelike quality of his stories. Item arrived within the stated shipping time frame and was in the stated condition; brand new, with no damage. Packaged securely. My only "complaint" is the book has a different cover than the one shown in the item's photo. This was slightly disappointing, as I liked the cover in the thumbnail. That being said, it's not an overly big issue, just surprising if you're expecting a specific cover. Overall, very happy with my purchase and would recommend this buyer!
