  • Gripping Reflection on Past Choices and the Disastrous Consequences

This week’s movie was “The Red Tent,” an epic Soviet-Italian co-production from 1969. Peter Finch stars as General Umberto Nobile, who commanded an ill-fated airship expedition to the North Pole In 1928. The film is told from the perspective of the explorer as an old man, still tortured by guilt over the horrors he experienced and the decisions he made. One sleepless night he calls back the ghosts of those affected by the disaster to serve as his jury in a private trial. Among the jurors is Roald Amundsen, (Sean Connery,) the first man to reach the South Pole. Amundsen died in a plane crash while attempting to rescue Nobile and his men. During the trial the story of the airship crash is told in flashback, as well as the tale of the lengthy struggles of the survivors in the Arctic wastes. ...

  • The Red Tent

An outstanding portrayal of man versus the elements. This is the story of the ill-fated "Italia" dirigible expedition to the north pole in 1929. It stars Peter Finch as Umberto Nobile, the commander of the expedition. The movie was released in 1968, when Nobile was still alive. He died in the '70's. The movie is an Italian-Russian production, and also stars Claudia Cardinale, Hardy Krueger, and Sean Connery as Raoul Amundsen, the famous Swedish Arctic and Antarctic explorer. The story is told in flashback style, which is used very effectively in relaying the hardship the men faced in the freezing polar conditions. Another outstanding feature of this film is the very moving score by Ennio Morricone, later of spaghetti western Clint Eastwood movies, "A Fistful of Dollars", "For A Few Dollars ...

  • The Rent Tent is an awesome movie

I bought this out of print movie at over $20, because I had to have my own copy. The dvd I rented through the mail played fairly well except for one hick-up. That dvd won't last much longer going through the mail system. Sean Connery isn't in every scene, oh well. The scenes that he is in are very impacting. The movie uses flashbacks, which has a surreal effect because the events portrayed in the movie happened forty years ago and the movie just happens to be forty years old itself (review written in 2010). Nowadays one would hope to be rescued from the Arctic in less than four weeks, but the lack of modern technology during the time of the events in the movie doesn't make it any harder to watch. Watch it, you won't be disappointed, unless your a teenager addicted to computer graphics.

  • 60's Classic Historical Drama

Sean Connery classic movie. This is a historical drama. It examines the conscious of an expedition leader who has doubts about the correctness of his leadership.
