About this product

Product Information

This edition has been updated to reflect new developments and includes new material obtained through the Freedom of Information Act. Pat Tillman walked away from a multimillion-dollar NFL contract to join the Army and became an icon of post-9/11 patriotism. When he was killed in Afghanistan two years later, a legend was born. But the real Pat Tillman was much more remarkable, and considerably more complicated than the public knew... A stunning account of a remarkable young man's heroic life and death, from the bestselling author of Into the Wild , Into Thin Air , and Under the Banner of Heaven .

"Nuanced, thorough, and chilling. . . . The arc of Tillman's life . . . echoes the trajectory of a classical hero's tale. . . . It acquires an almost legendary power." - The Oregonian "The fallen man at the heart of Where Men Win Glory quickly emerges as a classic Krakauer character. A charismatic athlete possessed of an insatiably curious mind, Tillman spurned the riches of life . . . to pursue old-fashioned notions of honor and sacrifice. He's Into the Wild 's Chris McCandless gone to war." - Outside Magazine   "Riveting. . . . Krakauer's gripping book about this extraordinary man who lived passionately and died unnecessarily sets the record straight." - USA Today   "Talk about an inspired pairing of subject and author. . . . [ Where Men Win Glory ] reveals a far more complex and emotional character than the mythical American 'hero.'" - O, The Oprah Magazine   "Everyone (hawks, doves, patriots, subversives) can find something to celebrate in Pat Tillman. . . . A detailed portrait of a complicated hero." - Sports Illustrated   "Gripping, heartbreaking reading. . . . At once unique and universal. . . . He has made [Tillman's story] compelling and passionate. . . . The man who emerges is an iconoclast who is comfortable with challenging the status quo but hardly an angel." - The Denver Post   "Krakauer brilliantly turns investigative reporter. . . . [A] wrenching account of the life and death of NFL star Pat Tillman." - People, 4 out of 4 stars   "It's tough to think of a better match than Jon Krakauer . . . and the story of Pat Tillman." - Men's Journal   "[A] riveting book. . . . The book is in perfect condition, brand new, and is exactly as described. This item is difficult to find here, and the seller priced it very reasonably. It shipped from the UK to Canada, and unfortunately took a little longer to arrive than the seller hoped, but it was shipped less than 24 hours after I purchased. When I contacted the seller, they were very responsive and helpful. I would not hesitate to purchase from this seller again. Definitely recommend!

  • Excellent overview of the last 15 years of US policy in Central Asia

Krakauer has a talent for writing what at first seems like a biography for a limited subject, but ends up using it as a starting point for much larger issues. Into Thin Air was just as much about the Everest Disaster as it was about the culture of mountaineering to a place human beings were never meant to visit on foot. Under the Banner of Heaven was ostensibly about a terrible double murder in the American West but was much more a detailed and contextual history of the Mormon faith. As is with Where Men Win Glory. On its face, Krakauer tells the story of how an unremarkable athlete with a solid conscience set out to do something greater for the country he loved, and wound up being wholly exploited by his government following his death at the hands of his own countrymen. But much ...

  • Another great work by Krakauer that needs to be shared

This well written book shows how screwed up the situation was and that Pat Tillman gave his life needlessly, and that those in charge who caused his death have never been brought to justice. A good read, an important read.

  • A must read for all Americans.

This book is an amazing account of Pat Tillman's life and how he and his family were betrayed by the U.S. government. As a Veteran and former U.S.Navy Corpsman it is hard to accept that.

  • A must read for people who care about our servicemen.

This is a fitting tribute to a man who wasn't looking for a tribute. Krakauer does his usual fine job of reporting, providing much background including a brief history of the conflicts in Afghanistan going back 30 years. He also dissects the cover-up very completely, names the actual shooters and who lied about what, when. The book will make you proud of Tillman, but not so proud of the people who direct our wartime efforts.

  • Jon K. did it again. Excellent.

Now I have a better understanding of the constant turmoil in that part of our world.
