About this product

Product Information

A sourcebook of contemporary and historical commentary on America's first popular mass entertainment. As the blackface minstrel show evolved from its beginnings in the American Revolution to its peak during the late 1800s, its frenetic dances, low-brow humor, and lively music provided more than mere entertainment. Indeed, these imitations and parodies shaped society's perceptions of African Americans-and of women-as well as made their mark on national identity, policymaking decisions, and other entertainment forms such as vaudeville, burlesque, the revue, and, eventually, film, radio, and television. Gathered here are rare primary materials-including firsthand accounts of minstrel shows, minstrelsy guides, jokes, sketches, and sheet music-and the best of contemporary scholarship on minstrelsy.

"This fine collection contains some of the oldest jokes in U.S. history and some of the freshest scholarship in American Studies. Inside the Minstrel Mask gathers primary sources, classic nineteenth-century accounts of blackface shows, influential modern accounts of the meaning of minstrelsy as a performance and craze, and exciting new work on race, gender and humor in one of the nation's most popular and enduring forms of entertainment."--David Roedigger, University of Minnesota, "This fine collection contains some of the oldest jokes in U.S. history and some of the freshest scholarship in American Studies. Shipping was fast but no tracking and worst packaging ever.. like the box came banged up... send a question to seller never had a reply 😅.... Good product overall, excellent price, fast shipping, wrapped only on 4 sides out of 6, no tracking and never reply... 4★ product / 2★ seller ✌️

The book is in perfect condition, brand new, and is exactly as described. This item is difficult to find here, and the seller priced it very reasonably. It shipped from the UK to Canada, and unfortunately took a little longer to arrive than the seller hoped, but it was shipped less than 24 hours after I purchased. When I contacted the seller, they were very responsive and helpful. I would not hesitate to purchase from this seller again. Definitely recommend!

  • Disturbing, but Necessary History

This book is a collection of skits from the hey days of the Minstrel show. They are disturbing, in that they portray African-Americans in the clownish, racist view of the past. At least, we hope it is past. Though these plays are disturbing, they are necessary to study and understand so we do not reapeat a rather embarrassing chapter in American history. They are well documented and are footnoted to help understand some of the terms of the day. I would highly recommend this book as a study tool! When viewed in its historical context, this book is one of the most valuable I've seen on the subject. JTrace The Civil War Minstrel
