The TV series that laid the foundation for Star Trek.
It’s easy to mock an old TV show like Rocky Jones, Space Ranger, given the low budget production values and primitive (for today’s standards) special effects. However, there is something about the show that still works today, despite it’s technical limitations. What this show has is what later made Star Trek the popular show that it came to be. Rocky Jones had heart, an imaginative story line, and a quirky cast of people with you can connect. Frankly the fact that it was low budget made for a small cast that made the stories surprisingly intimate, with the result being a surprising sense of family about the crew and support people. Rocky, Winky, Vena and Bobby behaved like a close knit set of siblings, with Secretary Drake being the supportive father and Professor Newton being the helpful ... It’s easy to mock an old TV show like Rocky Jones, Space Ranger, given the low budget production values and primitive (for today’s standards) special effects. However, there is something about the show that still works today, despite it’s technical limitations. What this show has is what later made Star Trek the popular show that it came to be. Rocky Jones had heart, an imaginative story line, and a quirky cast of people with you can connect. Frankly the fact that it was low budget made for a small cast that made the stories surprisingly intimate, with the result being a surprising sense of family about the crew and support people. Rocky, Winky, Vena and Bobby behaved like a close knit set of siblings, with Secretary Drake being the supportive father and Professor Newton being the helpful uncle. And the mother? The space ship, of course, be it either the Orbit Jet or the Silver Moon. Let us also not forget the fabulous anti-mother – Cleolanta, the ruler of the planet Ophiucius and a proto-feminist. Who could forget how she kept all of the men around her cowering with fear as she gave orders like a CEO, rather than a Queen. Likewise Rocky and Winky, rather than battling with her, kept on trying to reason with her and bring her over to United World way of thinking. In fact, like Star Trek, there was this underlying message that in the future things will be better and people will be living healthier, more egalitarian lives. Again, like Star Trek, there is really no reference made to nations (No American flags or references to the country). The frame of reference is now planets and Earth in particular. The only real division is between good and bad (even Cloelanta has a hard time being truly evil), with the forces of good (Rocky and his crew) trying to recruit people to follow that path. Why? Because it’s a nice warm way to live and everyone who does so is happy, while bad people are never really happy, even if they have wealth and power. This five DVD set has 16 episode from the 39 that made up the series (it only lasted two years) plus some extras. Original film prints of good quality appear to have been used in the DVD transfer, so the images are clear and the audio is clean. It may be hard for people born into a world with the Internet, Cable/Satellite TV and digital everything to appreciate black and white images from a time when your town or city might have only two or three TV channels to choose from. Still, this show contains many elements from the characters, story line and special effect that came to be the templates for the TV shows we’ve come to consider to be part of our cultural fabric. So let’s give the pioneers of TV science fiction some respect and forgive their short comings and simply enjoy a good story that’s filled with warm feelings and imagination.

Pretty Good, But Needs Improvement. And More Episodes.
I am a fan of the old "Rocky Jones Space Ranger" TV serial, so I bought this collection so that I would be able to see more episodes. I was a bit dismayed when I opened the box and found out that it didn't include the complete series. After all, it IS sold as a boxed set. The manufacturer would have done better by including more episodes on the fifth disc, rather than the movie "Missle to the Moon" (which I already have) and space travel filler. The picture quality is pretty decent on most episodes in this collection, but others need lots of improvement. I realize that the DVD's were copied from a TV show that's over fifty years old, but every episode was produced within a year of the others. Therefore, I feel that the picture quality of all episodes should at least closely equal the ...
