About this product

Product Information

"Who are we?" is the question at the core of these fascinating essays from one of the nation's leading intellectual historians. With old identities increasingly destabilized throughout the world the result of demographic migration, declining empires, and the quickening integration of the global capitalist economy and its attendant communications systems David A. Hollinger argues that the problem of group solidarity is emerging as one of the central challenges of the twenty-first century. Building on many of the topics in his highly acclaimed earlier work, these essays treat a number of contentious issues, many of them deeply embedded in America's past and present political polarization. Essays include "Amalgamation and Hypodescent," "Enough Already: Universities Do Not Need More Christianity," "Cultural Relativism," "Why Are Jews Preeminent in Science and Scholarship: The Veblen Thesis Reconsidered," and "The One Drop Rule and the One Hate Rule." Hollinger is at his best in his judicious approach to America's controversial history of race, ethnicity, and religion, and he offers his own thoughtful prescriptions as Americans and others throughout the world struggle with the pressing questions of identity and solidarity."

"In A Sail to Great Island a sailor explores what he can learn in isolation with nature, and a landman, rooted in his bonds to family and place, works to get past the grid of his own needs in order to explore the meaning and value of his connections. The poems begin with clearly defined contexts, but they move quickly to reach beyond the local, gathering weight and momentum as they explore with wit and sympathy the widest implications of their subjects."--Carl Dennis, Felix Pollak Prize judge and winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Practical Gods, "InA Sail to Great Islanda sailor explores what he can learn in isolation with nature, and a landman, rooted in his bonds to family and place, works to get past the grid of his own needs in order to explore the meaning and value of his connections. Inventive, vital, witty, and precise, this poet has a rare and deep allegiance to the life of the heart. Reading Feldman's steady, funny, well-wrought poems reminds me how blind we are in the world; reading these poems I feel my fingertips being guided over the Braille." -Tony Hoagland, author of What Narcissism Means to Me , and winner of the James Laughlin Award for Donkey Gospel, "Alan Feldman's poems are sentimental in the best sense of the word: fully intelligent, closely attentive studies of how feeling colors and enriches experience. Here is a master-maker who can offer us poems that dazzle us with their beauty as they ride us through everyday real, or break our heart because they are so imaginative, so true. Alan Feldman is one of the best poets in America."-Bill Zavatsky, winner of the PEN/Book-of-the-Month Club Translation Prize for Earthlight: Poems of André Breton, "In A Sail to Great Island a sailor explores what he can learn in isolation with nature, and a landman, rooted in his bonds to family and place, works to get past the grid of his own needs in order to explore the meaning and value of his connections. Product is 95% alike picture but a little more blurry. Controller play well but had a notice from psn that my joypad wasn't authentic and could by problematic🤷‍♂️ no trouble so far! Shipping was fast but no tracking and worst packaging ever.. like the box came banged up... send a question to seller never had a reply 😅.... Good product overall, excellent price, fast shipping, wrapped only on 4 sides out of 6, no tracking and never reply... 4★ product / 2★ seller ✌️

The book is in perfect condition, brand new, and is exactly as described. This item is difficult to find here, and the seller priced it very reasonably. It shipped from the UK to Canada, and unfortunately took a little longer to arrive than the seller hoped, but it was shipped less than 24 hours after I purchased. When I contacted the seller, they were very responsive and helpful. I would not hesitate to purchase from this seller again. Definitely recommend!
