About this product

Product Information

A monumental new work of scholarship on a luminary of twentieth-century art "I'm not sure I have ever seen a catalogue raisonné as beautiful, as magnificent, as the new publication on the oeuvre of the great American sculptor David Smith."--Michael Fried, Bookforum Embracing factory methods of construction, building on the legacy of cubism, and turning his back on European carving and casting traditions, David Smith (1906-1965) transformed postwar sculpture. His body of work, contemporary with the New York School in painting, and his pioneering placement of sculptures in a natural setting are foundational for present-day sculpture and installation art. This three-volume boxed set comprehensively details the entirety of Smith's sculptural oeuvre. It is now the definitive catalogue raisonné and supplants the one constructed by Rosalind E. Krauss in 1977. With Christopher Lyon as Editor and Susan J. Cooke as Research Editor, the volumes also contain a Foreword by Rebecca and Candida Smith, essays by Michael Brenson, Sarah Hamill, Marc-Christian Roussel, Christopher Lyon, and a chronology by Tracee Ng. Throughout the volumes, reproductions of documents and images, including many photographs, paintings, drawings, and sketches by the artist, offer fresh insights into Smith's methods and creative thought. Handsomely designed and generously illustrated with fine color reproductions, this catalogue raisonné is both a sumptuous object and an essential scholarly resource. "[R]eaders can grasp the astonishing breadth of Smith's inimitable achievement--a wellspring for sculptors and art lovers alike. . . . This sumptuous box set . . . a thorough, generously illustrated journey through Smith's remarkable oeuvre . . . is a fitting tribute to an American master."--Lance Esplund, Wall Street Journal "In these elegantly produced volumes . . . [w]e see [Smith's] achievement whole, the individual sculptures often united with preparatory drawings and archival photographs of works in progress. We feel Smith reaching in different directions. We're closer to appreciating the tangled metamorphoses that animate his work."--Jed Perl, New York Review of Books "I'm not sure I have ever seen a catalogue raisonné as beautiful, as magnificent, as the new publication on the oeuvre of the great American sculptor David Smith."--Michael Fried, Bookforum "Smith put American sculpture on the map, an achievement presented in its entirety here."-- ARTnews , "Best Art Books" holiday gift guide "I can't remember the last time I've seen an achievement like this: so beautifully produced, so completely researched, so full of wonderful photographs, including many never published before."--Anne Wagner, professor emerita, University of California, Berkeley, "Smith put American sculpture on the map, an achievement presented in its entirety here."-- ARTnews ("Best Art Books" holiday gift guide) "I'm not sure I have ever seen a catalogue raisonné as beautiful, as magnificent, as the new publication on the oeuvre of the great American sculptor David Smith."-Michael Fried, Bookforum "[R]eaders can grasp the astonishing breadth of Smith's inimitable achievement--a wellspring for sculptors and art lovers alike. . . . Shipping was fast but no tracking and worst packaging ever.. like the box came banged up... send a question to seller never had a reply 😅.... Good product overall, excellent price, fast shipping, wrapped only on 4 sides out of 6, no tracking and never reply... 4★ product / 2★ seller ✌️

The book is in perfect condition, brand new, and is exactly as described. This item is difficult to find here, and the seller priced it very reasonably. It shipped from the UK to Canada, and unfortunately took a little longer to arrive than the seller hoped, but it was shipped less than 24 hours after I purchased. When I contacted the seller, they were very responsive and helpful. I would not hesitate to purchase from this seller again. Definitely recommend!
