ED Emberley's Great Thumprint Drawing Book
My eleven year old daughter saw a copy of the book and thought that the drawings were easy as well as fun. For people with limited artistic talent like myself, there are step by step instructions. The book is great for craft projects such as decorating hats, aprons, or pillow cases. It is a great way for teachers to give memory gifts to classmates. Each child can make a thumbprint animal or other item using fabric paint. I have seen other books by Ed Emberly with more of a variety of things to make with thumbprints. Ed Emberley's Great Thumbprint Drawing Book
Many years ago I used to make thumb print figures for use on greeting cards, and they were darling! I love the little mice! I could not remember how to do all the figures, and was delighted to find this book. (I recently got the Finger Print Drawing Book too.)Children will enjoy making these figures. The Learning Store has a great palette for inking of thumbs and fingers in various color inks. It is meant specifically for this activity. The drawings are simple and can be done by anyone. Then comes the fun of making a caption or a verse for it. I highly recommend this book for its entertainment value! Because if guided by the parent at first, so the child understands the steps to producing the picture at the end of the steps....the child learns the skill of logical order in the bringing about of results desired. Admittedly, this is just one of many ways for a child to experience 'art' for art's sake.. but it is a valuable one. My young son, at first, just looked at the last picture which was the result of a process. He became bewildered because he would start with glee and end with frustration. Willy nilly doesn't teach the child all that Ed Emberly is trying to convey and develop in the child's mind. Get one of these books and try them your self. ... Product in excellent condition. Love what Ed Emberly writes at the beginning of the book I bought for my son in 1977, to the effect... this is the book I needed which I never had. Process is the key word here. If you follow the steps his way, the learnings are many: disipline and patience are only two of them. If you allow a child just to 'do what he wishes'the book will not become the tool it is intended to be. So, bottome line parents, please! sit with him or her and begin at the beginning...and practice the process until it becomes comfortable and enjoyable...then he will (perhaps) be ready to go it on his own.

I also make a scrapbook for each child and since you use the childs' thumbprint to make pictures with, parents can have a memento that shows how small their little ones thumb use to be. Older kids would also like the book too. I volunteer at an elementary school and I have seen a 4th grader check out the same book at the library.
