About this product

Product Information

Environmental historians have too often overlooked California and Hawai'i, despite the roles the regions played in the colonial ranching frontiers of the Pacific World. In Cattle Colonialism, John Ryan Fischer significantly enlarges the scope of the American West by examining the trans-Pacific transformations these animals wrought on local landscapes and native economies.

Reviews
" Cattle Colonialism will certainly influence the next generation of scholars interested in more carefully delineating the intersection of ecological forces and local human actions, both of which shape our increasingly globalized history. As Fischer argues, it is not an "either/or" narrative. Rather, the best environmental histories are "both." This is one of them." --American Historical Review, An important study that reveals in substantial detail how ostensibly obscure commodities like beef, hides, and tallow could render such rapid and complete transformations of well-established indigenous economies, societies, and ecologies.-- Environmental History, Well-researched, well-written, and extremely readable. . . . Will appeal to those who teach environmental, social, western, agricultural, and American history, as well as anyone who enjoys a book that ties together so many unrelated items in a seamless and apparently effortless manner.-- Southwestern Historical Quarterly, Breaks new ground. . . . Breath[es] life into the histories of Indigenous craftspeople that underpinned the cattle economy.-- American Historical Review, An ideal read for those wanting a thorough introduction to Hawaiian and Californian colonial histories, with a strong focus on the two region's respective environments.-- Journal of the Native American and Indigenous Studies Association, " Cattle Colonialism will certainly influence the next generation of scholars interested in more carefully delineating the intersection of ecological forces and local human actions, both of which shape our increasingly globalized history. As Fischer argues, it is not an 'either/or' narrative. Rather, the best environmental histories are 'both.' This is one of them." --American Historical Review, Aficionados of western history will be drawn to Fischer's stories of indigenous cowboys as well as his discussion of the hide and tallow trade.-- Western Historical Quarterly

Product is 95% alike picture but a little more blurry. Controller play well but had a notice from psn that my joypad wasn't authentic and could by problematic🤷‍♂️ no trouble so far! Shipping was fast but no tracking and worst packaging ever.. like the box came banged up... send a question to seller never had a reply 😅.... Good product overall, excellent price, fast shipping, wrapped only on 4 sides out of 6, no tracking and never reply... 4★ product / 2★ seller ✌️

The book is in perfect condition, brand new, and is exactly as described. This item is difficult to find here, and the seller priced it very reasonably. It shipped from the UK to Canada, and unfortunately took a little longer to arrive than the seller hoped, but it was shipped less than 24 hours after I purchased. When I contacted the seller, they were very responsive and helpful. I would not hesitate to purchase from this seller again. Definitely recommend!
