Reviews
Embroidered Birds and Their Habitats captures my interest primarily because of the habitats in the title. When I first read through the book, in fact, I had a hard time seeing it as a book of "hand embroidery techniques and inspiration." To me, it is much more of a textile art book that focuses on the process of building a whole work of textile art. In a Nutshell: I think this is a wonderful book for embroiderers and mixed media textile enthusiasts. I really enjoyed reading the whole book from cover to cover. I loved seeing Judy's creative process. More than anything, though, I think that Embroidered Birds and Their Habitats makes this type of scenic textile art doable to those who might see it as complex. I know I've often looked in wonder at this type of art and thought it would be too complicated for me to enjoy doing it. This book completely turned my head around on that notion! She makes the techniques super accessible. Finally, after reading the book, I found myself much more attuned to what I was seeing in the environment around me. Now, when I look at birds - even if they're on my feeders - I find myself looking beyond the birds. I notice better the places the birds are hanging out in. I notice more about the bushes they're in, the shapes of the twigs, the buds and leaves. I notice the ground and its multiple textures and shades of color. And I find myself thinking in layers. -- Mary Corbet's Needle 'n' Thread - March 2023

Synopsis
A stunning, high-level embroidery book on birds, by Judy Wilford, one the world's leading embroiderers. This stunning new title from master embroiderer Judy Wilford explores her fascination with birds and the ways they interact with their surroundings. Through research she turned her collection of rough sketches and notes into drawings and finally the beautiful embroideries featured in the book. This sumptuous book is divided into three parts, working through the simplest to the more intricate or complicated forms of the subject. Each piece of work is divided into two areas and includes those elements applied to the rigid frame, to form the background or 'on-framework', and those stitched 'off-frame' on a hoop and applied later. Part 1 covers the basic requirements of what you need, including design requirements, embroidery materials - fabrics, needles and threads - equipment, rigid frames, and your workspace. It also includes a section on research and choosing a suitable bird and its habitat, concluding with a project that guides the reader through the entire process from inspiration through to working design, giving all the skills and techniques needed to complete a hand-stitched, low-relief panel based on birds and habitats. Part 2 explores processes and techniques used in designing and working more complicated elements. This project includes elements embroidered 'off-frame' and applied to the work, such as tree trunks, branches, birds' nests and, of course, the birds. Part 3 includes further examples of the author's embroideries and drawn designs that could be used in future works. This section also includes information on finishing the work (mounting and framing), a stitch glossary, reference section and acknowledgements. Though Judy's focus is on Australian birds, the embroideries themselves will appeal to an international audience, and the processes and techniques she uses can be adapted and used by textile artists and embroiderers for a broad range of subjects., Multi-talented visual artist Judy Wilford invites you to share in her enduring passions: the arts, the land that surrounds her, and the birds she has observed and embroidered over many years. Inspiring and practical in equal measure, this book showcases dozens of Judy's lifelike finished embroideries alongside clear, practical advice. You will learn what embroidery materials and equipment you need; how to research and choose a suitable bird and its habitat to embroider; and how to draw up a working design that best displays your chosen bird and its place in the wider landscape. Two complete projects walk you through every embroidery process, from initial inspiration through to completed artwork, allowing you to pick up all the skills and techniques needed to complete a hand-stitched, low-relief panel. The book also includes finishing techniques such as mounting and framing, and a stitch glossary that includes Judy's own adapted stitches. Embroidered Birds and their Habitats is an essential addition to any embroiderer's - or bird-lover's - bookshelf.
