One of my all time favorite Hollywood movies. Inspires without overdoing!
I searched for years for a copy of this great movie and finally got it. From the mid 40's until Hollywood morphed into what it has become today, there remained movies that told a story filled with moral and social values that are lacking in movies today. Faithfull to the original small novel by John Steinbeck The Moon Is Down portrays good versus evil, freedom against servitude and most importantly one's own morality against the demands of the victor. The lives in this small Norway country are shown as being humble without being arrogant. The leaders, primarily the town doctor and mayor reflect strongly the idea that a free Country does not have to go wit the wishes of the German invaders, despite the threat of death. Henry Travers (best known to us as the angle "Clarence" in "It's A ... I searched for years for a copy of this great movie and finally got it. Lee J. Cobb is the town doctor and lifelong friend of the mayor and he too knows that true freedom comes with the basic idea that life is a two sided coin; one that says freedom on one side and responsibility on the other side. My only minor thought is the casting of Sir Cedric Hardwicke as the German leader is perhaps not quite as hard and demanding as could have been portrayed. However one can easily see that the Head German officer really knows what is in store for him and his troops. And thus the audience feels the frustration he feels is coming.
