Gigi - the movie based on book by Collette
This is a very good movie based on the book by Collette. It is very French in its point of view. Many of the main actors are French which makes for an even better production. Maurice Chevalier and Louis Jourdan have played in several films together. Each have been delightful and this one is no exception. Chevalier plays a man about town who still delights in all of the finer things of life. He is the eternal romantic. Jourdan plays his bon vivant nephew who is bored with everything and yearns for a simpler life. This is well described in the song "It's a Bore". Gigi is played by Leslie Caron. It would be hard to imagine anyone else in the part. She typifies the young French girl to the young woman who is emerging on society. Gigi has been brought up by her grandmother, played by ... In the filming, Vincente Minelli's touch is obvious in the use of silouettes. Probably should mention the role of Jourdan's mistress played by Zsa Zsa Gabor. She was delightful as always. The music by Lerner and Lowe is delightful and well-suited to the book. "Thank Heaven for Little Girls" and "Gigi" being among our favourites. If you are a musicals buff, you will want this film in your collection. It is sure to delight.
