  • Excellent first hand account

Good account from a journalist attached to a flanking unit during a Marine offensive through the jungle of Guadalcanal. He is quite observant, and offers a perspective not found very often in books about Guadalcanal. This battle is personal for my family because my Father and two Uncles (one became my Godfather), were there as Marines. I had a cousin, an Uncle, my Father-in-Law, and his brother there with the Navy. They of course told a lot of tall tales, and occasionally related some facts. This book does them justice by describing them as everyday men that had a terrible task to perform. I liked this book and would have liked it to have been longer.

  • A realistic look at combat on Guadalcanal.

The book covers the efforts of the 5th Marines along Matanikau river. The author does a great job of capturing the terror and confusion that is combat. No embellished stories of glory. Just the exhausting grid of combat.
