The developers of Far Cry return to the first-person shooter genre in their first game for publishing giant Electronic Arts. The year is 2019 and a massive asteroid has crash-landed somewhere within North Korea. Soon it is revealed that the asteroid is in fact a gigantic alien vessel whose malevolent mission is to eradicate mankind. As part of a covert Delta Force squad from the United States, players must fend off alien advances through tropical jungles, frozen terrain, and other climate-altered regions in an attempt to board the gravity-free mother ship. Created using Crytek's proprietary game engine, Crysis offers a dynamic world featuring earthquakes, tornados, landslides, and breakaway ice. The perpetually changing environment requires adaptive techniques for the squad to survive, and players can commandeer trucks, tanks, boats, helicopters, and other vehicles to help reach their objectives. The alien AI is also designed to challenge, adopting real-world military tactics and coordinating attacks to fight as an enterprising entity. Crysis features a number of options for soldiers in combat, with the ability to grab and use nearly any item found in each destructible environment. Online multiplayer support is available for up to 32 combatants, and a toolset is included for creative players to construct levels for use in either solo or multiplayer action.

The biggest "crysis" will be a broken keyboard!
Crysis is notorious for being the most demanding game to date. When I first ran the game, the recommended settings wanted everything on high, but with no anti-aliasing and at 1024x768. I ran the game this way at first and it looked amazing and ran splendidly... but I'm a gamer, and as such I'm greedy so I decided to put my 9800 GTX and my Q6600 to the test. I increased the resolution to 1280x960 then turned on the 8x AA... and guess what? Crysis still runs nicely, even at these settings! While this game is very demanding of hardware, modern components will run it just fine. It's difficult to describe just how good this game looks! The cut scenes, rendered in real time, show your companions up close with great facial detail. The environments are lush and brilliant and the special effects ... That having been said, Crysis leaves something to be desired in the gameplay category. Maybe hardcore fps players will disagree, but this game is just far too difficult for a person to pick up and begin playing. That is a major limit of the game; even on the "easy" setting it is very frustrating. Your hero has a very short lifespan; enemy ammunition takes his health away in large chunks and wave after wave of enemies coming after you from all directions is not as much a rarity as you might like it to be. Add to that a clumsy and difficult to navigate power-up system and you have combat that would even make a pro want to smash his keyboard against the floor. Most of my gameplay experience with Crysis involved trying to sneak past enemies, failing to do so, running away, hiding until I recovered my health, then repeating the process until they got the better of me. The story is also nothing to get excited about; Crysis is the story of a team of nanosuit-wearing U.S. soldiers in the future performing a police action in North Korea when strange things begin happening; they soon discover that the North Koreans are not the only enemy they have to worry about when one of their own is killed by a strange creature. Unfortunately for the player, the North Koreans are near invincible. Even the nanosuit-wearing hero is no match for 3 or 4 enemy soldiers in many situations. Crysis is visually incredible! There is no doubt about that. The gameplay isn't bad per se; it's more that the challenge curve is completely unbalanced. There is no real "easy" mode in crysis; think of "easy" mode as "hard" in other games and the highest difficulty in crysis like "don't bother." In spite of that, the nanosuit does have some cool abilities and experienced players may find that the challenge curve does not set them off so easily. For that reason I'll give Crysis an "average" rating. It's not totally unplayable, but it is more eye candy than anything else.

Crysis: A great FPS game!!!
I had heard and read rave reviews of the FPS Crysis for about a year, but didn't know anyone who had bought it. It seems like lots of gamers were spending big bucks to build machines intended just to run this game. So, I was fairly concerned because reviews repeatedly reemphasized how CPU & graphics intensive the game is, because I bought my dual-processor machine (dual 2.4 xeon Dell Precision 650) seven years ago in 2001 and put a ATI9800XT card in it way back then--this is close to the minimum requirements of the game! So, I wasn't willing to try out the game until the price had come down to a pretty affordable level. Used copies on eBay, fortunately, are very affordable and work just like new copies. I received the game within a few days of winning the auction. The pristine box ... I had heard and read rave reviews of the FPS Crysis for about a year, but didn't know anyone who had bought it. I received the game within a few days of winning the auction. The pristine box came with the installation DVD and the brief manual that has the installation code on it. Everything installed without any trouble, including the key. I ran the program without any trouble as well. The program figured out good settings for me automatically, which were on its low end--the "low" rendering quality works just fine and still is fairly attractive. I tried higher settings with only a little latency between my actions and the video. The program, I assume because of my now low-end graphics card, didn't allow all the highest settings; but, I tried to max. it out with the largest video screen size and features. The pictures were stunning! Also, it really heated up my video card to about 101oC, and I decided to reduce the settings some. So, just about any level works well for the gamer who wants to shoot 'em up. The higher settings, of course, are more aesthetically beautiful. I found I was able to get rid of the latency and achieve higher graphics levels by increasing the priority of the game with taskman. I watchted the temperature with the ATI driver, but there is free software around that will report the temperature of various internal parts for you. They work well too. The game's narrative is good, and the game helps you out in figuring out how to move around and fulfill missions. I felt surprised by events and opponents. I felt challenged without being decimated right off. I had lots of choices of how to defeat them, from taking over vehicles to the standard shooting back & forth. This is a very well designed game!!! The downsides are minimal. The manual that comes with the game is not particularly useful, but on-line resources can tell you a lot more anyways. If you want high-end graphics, you need to have a good machine, of course; and need to watch the temperature of your machine to make sure you don't burn it up! After playing for a little while, I had to get back to real work. So, I have many more hours of fun awaiting me. Right now, I'm still playing the easy level and perhaps I'll build up skill. This is a great game. If you like some drama with lots of first-person shooting, this is for you!

The enemy appearance (Aliens) was cool, and they were fun to fight. The Koreans though were a little plain. Weapon selection is not bad but not great, with only about four or five guns that are practical to use most of the time. Towards the end when you're in a no gravity environment navigating can be annoying and I think they should have made that particular section shorter. The Nano-suit abilities are cool and simple to use. Vehicles are fun to use but I found myself just getting out and running instead.
