About this product

Product Information

Released in 1995, EarthBound for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System console has become a cult classic. Much of that has to do with the game's story. EarthBound, known as the Mother 2 in Japan, was designed as a realistic RPG game. As Ness, you won't venture into castles and villages but rather cities and laboratories. To save your game, you'll call your father using a payphone. To get from location to location, you buy a ticket for the bus. Even your weapons are baseball bats and slingshots instead of swords and shields. This SNES game starts in your small village of Onett where a meteor has crash-landed in your backyard. An otherworldly presence instructs you to find eight powerful objects to stop an evil force called Giygas from consuming the world. Giygas seeks to take over the world and turn all creatures and humans into malicious beings. You'll control Ness and a group of characters while visiting eight sanctuaries to collect melodies and stop the threat. As you travel from location to location, you will encounter enemies to battle. EarthBound uses a turn-based combat system in the first-person view. This view means that when combat begins, you can see your enemies, but you can't see your characters. You'll exchange blows back and forth until your enemies fall. The HP system in EarthBound is unique; rather than the damage coming off immediately, it counts down from a counter. Even if an enemy scores a critical hit on you, you can still heal yourself before you pass out if you're quick enough. The realistic slant of EarthBound extends to the enemies as well. You'll fight everything from possessed cars to hippies and yetis. In fact, the first boss battle in this Super Nintendo game takes place in an arcade against a group of local bullies. You will have some tricks up your sleeves when it comes to fighting off this array of enemies. Ness is never alone as he's joined by three other travelers. Paula is a girl who was captured by a cult and holds a secret. Jeff is a genius; he's able to invent new weapons with the objects around him. Poo is the prince of a faraway kingdom. Together with these three friends, Ness is ready to tackle the world. Eventually, your characters will gain access to powerful PSI attacks as well. You'll use these psychic powers to damage all your opponents at once or protect your friends from harm. You'll also win money in the bank that you can use to buy weapons, armor, and other items to heal your wounds. Part of the original Mother series, EarthBound for the Super Nintendo features a unique graphical style. Everything in this RPG Nintendo game pops off the screen and appears realistic. The music in the game was composed by Keiichi Suzuki and Hirokazu Tanaka. The soundtrack won awards from publications such as Nintendo Power. The goal of game director Shigesato Itoi was to create a video game that appealed to everyone. For this reason, EarthBound is suitable for all ages, so both kids and adults can enjoy and play it. While this SNES game features some humor only adults will get, it still has plenty of humor for the little ones. If you're a gamer looking for an original SNES role-playing game, pick up a copy of EarthBound. This complete 30-hour Nintendo adventure is one you'll never forget.

    Outstanding

This is THE cult classic. If you haven’t played it, do yourself a favor and get it. Very few games have the audacity to make fun of their own genre. This game does it shamelessly. If you hate turn based RPGs, you will like this game. If you love turn based RPGs, you will love this game. Do yourself a favor, if you only play one retro game ever, make Earthbound (Mother 2) the game you play.

  • Earthbound lost classic- if you're looking for it.

Okay, I hate turned based rpg's.... there I said it, I have betrayed my credo of fellow nerds and I'm ready to get thrown to the lions. I just feel like they take the most GED programming skills, and rarely offer anything to the genre. So what makes this one different? Graphics/Design: 24 MB (EB has) is considered to be a big ass game for the time. Earthworm Jim was 24 MB and it looked amazing... this game was made by HAL (responsible for Kirby and Lolo) as well as APE (who would go on to make Pokemon) and boy does it look like it... 24 MB not spent on design. HOWEVER- part of the reason was this game POV wasn't a straight top down but a 45' angled downward, during the time this was a b**ch to program. Also this game is a sequel in Japan (Mother 2) and having seen ...

  • A Great Game For The SNES.

This game is a lot of fun. It's pretty quirky. While I haven't beaten it yet, I'm amazed at how good the game is so far I'm an old-school gamer, and an almost exclusive RPG player. The only thing I don't like about this game is the PRICE! You'd think even an AMAZING SNES game would sell for like $20-$40, because of its age. But I bought this for $89 I think, and it was early 2010 when I got it, a full FIFTEEN years after the game came out. Anyway, other than the price, the game is awesome. Even though this game came out in 95, the graphics are pretty good. The game looks good, and it's bright and colorful. But also has some somber factors. Like the idea of home-sickness(which can plague the main character, manifested as an actual illness). The game is great, but don't take my word for it. ...

  • The game is great and all

But seriously, people go too crazy over it... I bet 90% of the people that bought this game didn't even know about it before Super Smash Bros. came out. Anyhow, I collect games from my childhood and that's really the only reason I was paying so much for it since I'm fond of my memories. The game has great music, alright graphics, good storyline, and it's funny, not to mention that the creator of the game and I have the same favorite band, The Beatles. Anyhow, the game is very fun and has obviously become an item for collectors of SNES games, possibly due to Super Smash Brothers which I am currently mad at for making a game a success for the worst possible reason ever and making it harder for me to find at a good price... I have searched long and hard for this game and ...

  • Weird game but really cool.

I started liking ness because I destroy with him in smash bros melee so my interest grew into spending 200 dollars to experience his game on my snes and not a ROM. It's so weird as an RPG but strangely interesting, graphics amd music are really nice for snes and the story is fun and compelling.. If you want a perfect copy be prepared to pay a little more and remember.. Authentic cartridges of Earthbound are made in mexico not japan!! (Displayed on the top of the back label) Study up to make sure your possible future copy is a real one :)
