About this product

Product Information

This classic silent German film tells of Lulu, a sensual chorus girl whose uncontainable sexual power literally destroys every man with whom she has an affair, until she encounters one of history's most notorious killers - Jack the Ripper. Considered particularly shocking at the time of its release because of the suggestion of a lesbian attraction between Lulu and a Countess. Brooks is at her sultry finest.

Queen of silent cinema ushers in era of modern acting through Criterion release

Combining a feature booklet and a DVD bearing the most complete silent film print available in public of the movie (which was heavily censored in its first release in 1929), the Criterion release of Pandora's Box makes this silent classic available to the masses, separate from the usual and rare select showings in limited cities in the U.S. G.W. Pabst's classic starring Louise Brooks is accompanied by four different musical scores, which are user selectable, including a 'period score' for the time of its release in 1929. The original film was shot on location inside a dirigible hanger in Staaken, Germany (suburb of Berlin), the home of Staaken Studios. This site was the same sight used by Fritz Lang in the making of his own classic, Metropolis. Pabst's film company, Nero Film AG, rented ...

  • Louise Brooks-the american Marlene Dietrich

I first became aware of the films of Louise Brooks after listening to the OMD song "Pandora's Box" as well as the music video of the same. The video clips showed me the range of expression of the actress, leading me to buy the DVD. The DVD transfer of the movie is uniformly excellent allowing the viewer to see Ms. Brooks nonverbal expression of the role she played w/such nuances reflected in her facial expression & body language.

  • Great Criterion classic shining bright on DVD!

Have loved Louise Brooks' silent films for years. And PANDORA'S BOX from Criterion is my favorite! This DVD is full of special features and I was lucky enough to get it from a great seller willing to let go of their copy for a reasonable price (usually well over $100 used) since its OOP. Criterion really needs to do a restoration for a blu ray release. But as is I will cherish this edition for the time being. They don't make great films like this anymore. Brilliant masterpiece!! This is a must have in any serious film fan's collection.

  • One of Criterion's Best.

Back in the 90's I bought Kino's VHS version of Pandora's Box. What a difference a decade makes. This restoration is a marvel! The image is as clean as you could ever expect for an 80-year-old film. No, better. You get four different accompanying scores to choose from--I prefer the modern orchestra and jazz improv versions. Scoring is a very big deal when you're watching a silent film, and the choices offered here are a vast improvement over Stuart Oderman's faux-decadent accompaniment on the Kino release, which I never felt was up to the task. This being a Criterion DVD release, you get a number of extras--perhaps the most important being the inclusion of Lulu in Berlin, Richard Leacock's 1974 interview with Brooks, which for me was as much of a selling point ...

  • Rare DVD: Pandora's Box

This film is a classic and one of Louise Brooks best performances. Criterion Video did a fine job on this release. This performance reflects the flavor of the age (late 1920's) and the location (Germany). It's also a timeless tale of human nature. Very well worth watching.
