About this product

Product Information

In this, the final volume in John Updike's mock-heroic trilogy about the Jewish American writer Henry Bech, our hero is older but scarcely wiser. Now in his seventies, he remains competitive, lecherous, and self-absorbed, lost in a brave new literary world where his books are hyped by Swiss-owned conglomerates, showcased in chain stores attached to espresso bars, and returned to warehouses three weeks after publication. In five chapters more startling and surreal than any that have come before, Bech presides over the American literary scene, enacts bloody revenge on his critics, and wins the world's most coveted writing prize. It's not easy being Henry Bech in the post-Gutenbergian world, but somebody has to do it, and he brings to the task his signature mixture of grit, spit, and ennui.

Reviews
"Wickedly funny . . . a joy to read . . . John Updike has given us a multitude of memorable characters, but none more lovable than the high-minded, mild-mannered, rather hapless writer Henry Bech." --Chicago Tribune   "Witty, acute, and surprisingly affecting . . . Updike at his most interesting and engaging . . . Like the other books about Henry Bech, this is modest in size but generous with its rewards."-- The Washington Post Book World   " Bech at Bay is brilliant." --The New York Review of Books, "Wickedly funny . . . a joy to read . . . John Updike has given us a multitude of memorable characters, but none more lovable than the high-minded, mild-mannered, rather hapless writer Henry Bech." -Chicago Tribune   "Witty, acute, and surprisingly affecting . . . Updike at his most interesting and engaging . . . Like the other books about Henry Bech, this is modest in size but generous with its rewards."- The Washington Post Book World   " Bech at Bay is brilliant." -The New York Review of Books, "Bech at Bay is brilliant." --The New York Review of Books "NEARLY EVERY PAGE OF THIS BOOK SPARKLES WITH LITTLE GEMS." --San Francisco Sunday Examiner & Chronicle "WICKEDLY FUNNY . . . A JOY TO READ . . . In his extraordinarily productive career, John Updike has given us a multitude of memorable characters, but none more lovable than the high-minded, mild-mannered, rather hapless writer Henry Bech. . . . Updike writes so well--with such intelligence, such precision, such grace--one is exhilarated by the sheer sentence-by-sentence beauty of the prose." --Chicago Tribune "A WONDERFUL NOVEL, EVIL AND FUNNY, A BIG CITY BURLESQUE BRISTLING WITH THE ARTIFACTS OF MODERN URBAN CULTURE." --Detroit Free Press "IF YOU'RE ANYTHING LITERARY--WRITER, PUBLISHER, EVEN CRITIC-- YOU'LL LOVE IT. AND IF YOU'RE NOT, YOU'LL LOVE IT TOO. . . . Bech at Bay is about getting old, about life and literature passing Bech by, about the end of a simpler, better age--and every word of it is fresh, sharp, up-to-date." --The Wall Street Journal "A COMIC DELIGHT . . . WICKED SATIRE OF THE LITERARY WHIRL." --People "WITTY, ACUTE, AND SURPRISINGLY AFFECTING . . . UPDIKE AT HIS MOST INTERESTING AND ENGAGING . . . Like the other books about Henry Bech, this is modest in size but generous with its rewards." --The Washington Post Book World "IRRESISTIBLE." --The Boston Globe

Product is 95% alike picture but a little more blurry. Controller play well but had a notice from psn that my joypad wasn't authentic and could by problematic🤷‍♂️ no trouble so far! Shipping was fast but no tracking and worst packaging ever.. like the box came banged up... send a question to seller never had a reply 😅.... Good product overall, excellent price, fast shipping, wrapped only on 4 sides out of 6, no tracking and never reply... 4★ product / 2★ seller ✌️

The book is in perfect condition, brand new, and is exactly as described. This item is difficult to find here, and the seller priced it very reasonably. It shipped from the UK to Canada, and unfortunately took a little longer to arrive than the seller hoped, but it was shipped less than 24 hours after I purchased. When I contacted the seller, they were very responsive and helpful. I would not hesitate to purchase from this seller again. Definitely recommend!
