Complete John Carter of Mars
It is a complete set of Edgar Rice Burroughs' "John Carter of Mars" series, all with the outstanding cover art by Michael Whelan. That alone makes them worth it, but it is actually difficult these days to find all 11 books. If you're a fan of Burroughs, this is an incredible collection. If you're not a fan of Burroughs, this is still an incredible collection, so just do yourself a favor and jump into the adventure on Barsoom. These stories are now a century old and still hold up fine today. They have inspired everyone from scientists like Carl Sagan to countless science fiction writers and filmmakers for decades.It is a complete set of Edgar Rice Burroughs' "John Carter of Mars" series, all with the outstanding cover art by Michael Whelan. Eleven Books Were Not Enough...
As a kid I was a voracious reader of science fiction. Ray Bradbury & Heinlein were awesome - I ate their stories up like popcorn. Later I discovered Joe Haldeman (The Forever War) and David Drake (Hammer's Slammers). But in sixth grade I read War of the Worlds and was blown away. This new interest in guys way before my time led me to the Conan series by Robert E. Howard - this was fantasy stuff but just so great. Then I saw a book by Edgar Rice Burroughs, about a "warlord of Mars..." From this first book "A Princess of Mars" to the eleventh book "John Carter of Mars" I was spellbound. This was a blend of sword-slinging mixed with ray blasters. Beasts and bad guys - and ROMANCE! I have memories of finishing one book "Synthetic Men of Mars" and I was flat out crying at the end. I have to start this ride again, and with this book - the beginning. I painfully remember that eleven books were not enough for me. I have to savor every page-turn, every battle and yes - every battle-earned smooch from this princess or that! If you like science fiction, you cannot lose on this series; if you're a fantasy reader, give Burroughs a try - as I say, this is a nice blend of the genres - very smooth! I might have gotten gushy in this review but the memories were there - and strong enough to bring me back again as I approach age fifty. The boy in me lives - I have books like this to thank for that; I will die some day but I will never truly be a "old man". (Note: I haven't seen the recent movie "John Carter", but it does seem to look to me visually as the book read... but to go there in your imagination - I wonder if CGI can bring tears like those of my past?)

I thought the content of the story was well advanced for the time in which it was written (early 1900's) and the characters were of the same type as in the Tarzan series. I especially liked that the hero was a man who had great character and morality. By todays standards the story would be judged as simple and unformed because of the great lengths that are taken to develop storylines and characters today. But all in all I though it was greatly entertaining and diverting.I decided to buy this book because I had never before read it and being a longtime Burroughs fan from my childhood wanted to read his first published work.
