About this product

Product Information

The ever-surprising John Updike's twenty-second novel is a brilliant contemporary fiction that will surely be counted as one of his most powerful. It tells of eighteen-year-old Ahmad Ashmawy Mulloy and his devotion to Allah and the words of the Holy Qur' an, as expounded to him by a local mosque's imam. The son of an Irish-American mother and an Egyptian father who disappeared when he was three, Ahmad turned to Islam at the age of eleven. He feels his faith threatened by the materialistic, hedonistic society he sees around him in the slumping factory town of New Prospect, in northern New Jersey. Neither the world-weary, depressed guidance counselor at Central High School, Jack Levy, nor Ahmad's mischievously seductive black classmate, Joryleen Grant, succeeds in diverting the boy from what his religion calls the Straight Path. When he finds employment in a furniture store owned by a family of recently immigrated Lebanese, the threads of a plot gather around him, with reverberations that rouse the Department of Homeland Security. But to quote the Qur' an: "Of those who plot, God is the best."

Reviews
" Terrorist leaves the reader ripping through the book to its finale, desperate to find out what happens. . . . [A] compelling and surprising ride."-- USA Today "A chilling tale that is perhaps the most essential novel to emerge from September 11."-- People (Critic's Choice) "The startlingly contemporary story of a high school student in a crumbling New Jersey town whose zealous Islamic faith and disaffection with modern life make him a pawn in the larger conflict between Muslim and Christian, East and West. They also make him a powerful voice for Updike's ongoing critique of American civilization."-- Time "His best novel in years. Passionate, timely, fiercely detailed . . . Updike's eye is on the contemporary American condition, and it misses nothing."-- The Providence Journal "An emotionally daring novel . . . A riveting plot."-- The Boston Globe "The most satisfactory elements in Terrorist are those that remind us that no amount of special pleading can set us free of history, no matter how oblivious and unresponsive to it we may be. And that history, in disposing of empires, admits of no innocents and spares no one."--Robert Stone, The New York Times Book Review "An arresting novel . . . A gripping and surprising resolution . . . The richest novel Updike has produced in some time, perhaps since Rabbit at Rest ."- Chicago Tribune "A soaring, beautifully nuanced work of fiction that both chills and touches the reader . . . A stunning work . . ."-- The Charlotte Observer

  • Updike, one of our grest American authors, at his best!

Two young women told me about the book, one of whom works in a book store to pay her college fees. She told me it was a quick read,; it appealed to her as a reader and history major, that it was well told and her favorite book of the year. She was right. We Americans can be very proud of Updike who sees us as we are, even though I don't always like what he sees. My heart breaks for the boy! cch

  • A good addition to any book collection

This was my first John Updike novel, and won't be my last. As the title states outright, this is a book that follows the development of a homegrown terrorist, recent high school graduate Ahmad Mulloy, and it raises some important points - about idealistic young men, about the older more worldly men who may wish to manipulate this sense of idealism to their own aims, and about faith. You finish the book thinking that the god Ahmad so devoutly believes in is neither Allah nor God really, but rather something much more subtle.
