About this product

Product Information

From New York Times bestselling author Bernard Cornwell, the sequel to The Archer's Tale and Vagabond --the spellbinding tale of a young man, a fearless archer, who sets out wanting to avenge his family's honor and winds up on a quest for the Holy Grail. Already a seasoned veteran of King Edward's army, young Thomas of Hookton possesses the fearlessness of a born leader and an uncanny prowess with the longbow. Now, at the head of a small but able band of soldiers, he has been dispatched to capture the castle of Astarac. But more than duty to his liege has brought him to Gascony, home of his forebears and the hated black knight who brutally slew Thomas's father. It is also the last place where the Holy Grail was reported seen. Here, also, a beautiful and innocent, if not pious, woman is to be burned as a heretic. Saving the lady, Genevieve, from her dread fate will brand Thomas an infidel, forcing them to flee together across a landscape of blood and fire. And what looms ahead is a battle to the death that could ultimately shape the future of Christendom.

  • A great end to a fantastic trilogy (The Grail Quest)

Cornwell has completed the Grail quest trilogy, Harlequin (The Archer's Tale in the U.S.) Vagabond and Heretic, with a wonderful climax that leaves every loose end tied up and every person, evil or good, dealt their final hand in life. The story continues to follow Thomas of Hookton as he endures the weight of the family burden (protectors of the grail), and his position as an archer in the English army; now commanding a garrison of men that are charged with taking a castle for the Earl of Northampton. The battles are, as with both of the first 2 books, well described and equally explained from both sides of the battle-line. Cornwell has presented a far more fictional book than the first two, which were described as historical fiction. This book, according to Cornwell's historical notes ...

  • Heretic by Bernard Cornwell

Heretic is a great read and I highly recommend it. This third book in the Grail Quest Series ties up all the loose ends from the previous 2 books but could also be read by itself. A great storyteller and writer of historical fiction, the author keeps the reader involved in the story and character development. He has the writing skills to transport the reader into the actual story's place and time. After reading the preceeding 2 novels and a few other of Cornwell's works I am hooked and want to read more from this author. In my humble opinion to read a Cornwell book is to read historical adventure. I also highly recommend The Archer's Tale and Vagabond, the two books that preceeded Heretic.

  • Thomas Hookton Quest.

Like any Bernard Cornwell series the book aligns with historic events. Excellent reading.
