Synopsis
The incredible story of the largest Prisoner of War escape in the Second World War - organized by ordinary men who ultimately did something extraordinary., The gripping, vividly told story of the largest POW escape in the Second World War - organized by an Australian bank clerk, a British jazz pianist and an American spy. In August 1944 the most successful POW escape of the Second World War took place - 106 Allied prisoners were freed from a camp in Maribor, in present-day Slovenia. The escape was organized not by officers, but by two ordinary soldiers: Australian Ralph Churches (a bank clerk before the war) and Londoner Les Laws (a jazz pianist by profession), with the help of intelligence officer Franklin Lindsay. The American was on a mission to work with the partisans who moved like ghosts through the Alps, ambushing and evading Nazi forces. How these three men came together - along with the partisans - to plan and execute the escape is told here for the first time. The Greatest Escape , written by Ralph Churches' son Neil, takes us from Ralph and Les's capture in Greece in 1941 and their brutal journey to Maribor, with many POWs dying along the way, to the horror of seeing Russian prisoners starved to death in the camp. The book uncovers the hidden story of Allied intelligence operations in Slovenia, and shows how Ralph became involved. We follow the escapees on a nail-biting 160-mile journey across the Alps, pursued by German soldiers, ambushed and betrayed. And yet, of the 106 men who escaped, 100 made it to safety. Thanks to research across seven countries, The Greatest Escape is no longer a secret. It is one of the most remarkable adventure stories of the last century., In 1941 Ralph Churches was captured in Greece and imprisoned in Stalag XVIIID in Maribor, Slovenia. A bank clerk in civilian life, and now a very junior member of military intelligence, Ralph hated being put to work for the Third Reich. He escaped twice and was recaptured. Then he met Leslie Laws, a musician-turned-army-driver, and a plan fell into place… In The Greatest Escape, Ralph's son Neil vividly recreates his father's story and the sometimes-brutal POW experience at Maribor. He reveals how Ralph and Les arranged the escape of 106 men, and the role played by US Major Franklin Lindsay, who was operating alongside the Partisan underground. The Partisans led the escapees on a harrowing 160-mile journey across the Alps pursued by German soldiers, ambushed and betrayed. One hundred POWs made it to safety. The Greatest Escape shines a light on a forgotten piece of wartime history - a story of courage and adventure kept secret for many years.

- i***c (886)- Feedback left by buyer.Past monthVerified purchaseThis is a frustrated positive feedback. I am always perplexed when sellers choose to ship via an "off-brand" shipper, e.g., OSM Worldwide. This tends to delay the time it takes to get to me vs more "traditioaal" shipped, e.g., USPS, UPS, or FED-EX. This is a pretty good seller. The price was good, the shipping pretty prompt (though deliver took a bit longer than I expected), and the communication was pretty good as well.
- z***i (1159)- Feedback left by buyer.Past 6 monthsVerified purchaseI recently purchased a book from this Seller, and I couldn't be more pleased with the entire experience. The book arrived in excellent condition, exactly as described. It was packaged in a sturdy, reusable cardboard envelope using no plastic at all.
