In >Der Richter und sein Henker< (1950) betritt Dürrenmatts Ermittler zum ersten Mal die Bühne: Kommissär Bärlach, ein Urgestein des Rechtssystems. Um einen Mord aufzuklären, bleibt ihm aus gesundheitlichen Gründen nur wenig Zeit. Wie Bärlach dabei mit den Begriffen Gerechtigkeit, Moral, Schuld und Strafe umgeht, ist ein Thema, das sich durch alle Kriminalromane Dürrenmatts zieht. So auch in >Der Verdacht< (1951), wo der Kommissär ein zweites Mal gegen Tod und Ungerechtigkeit kämpft: aus unbändigem Trotz, »in dieser Welt zu bestehen und für eine andere, bessere zu kämpfen«. In >Das Versprechen< (1958) versucht ein anderer Kommissär, Matthäi, verbissen, einen Kindermörder zur Strecke zu bringen. Dafür scheut er weder die Gefahr noch deren Folgen. >Justiz< (1985) thematisiert die Verwicklungen eines jungen Rechtsanwalts im feinen Netz aus Gerechtigkeit, Rechtssystem und Moral. Seinen fünften (und unvollendeten) Kriminalroman >Der Pensionierte< (1995) begann Dürrenmatt bereits 1969, schrieb ihn jedoch immer wieder um. Der Held des Romans, der kranke, fresssüchtige Kommissär Höchstettler, ist Bärlach wie aus dem Gesicht geschnitten.
