'There is no fiction that can compete with good, gossipy, anecdotal history--the inside story of who said or did what in moments of great tensions or crisis...I think you ought to read this history and weep, read it and laugh, read it and don't repeat it.'--Anatole Broyard

His great books include "Last Lion" about Winston Churchill and "American Caesar" about Douglas MacArthur, His work is extremely well researched, logical and readable. He helps the reader understand, not only the "What?" of history but also the "Why?" Historic events repeat because the conditions that cause them repeat. Thus good historic accounts can serve as crystal balls to help predict the future. It was during the presidential campaign of 2016 that I read Manchester's chapter on Harry Truman and the presidential election of 1948. • American History at Its Best - The Glory and the Dream

I've had the Glory and the Dream in paperback binding since it's first publishing. William Manchester did masterful job in writing about the 30's, 40's, 50's, 60's, and early 70's. It is one of the best books I've ever read. If you like to read American History, this book is one you should possess.
