The book began as Garland's wartime notebooks, and follows his journey from privileged Harvard student to 'dogface' with the 45th Infantry Division on the Winter Line and Anzio Beachhead. During the 1970s, still struggling with war's aftereffects while attempting to write his memoir, Garland tracked down some 20 buddies. Most had never spoken of the war to anyone; they talked to Joe with grit, humor and suffering intact, and the story grew into a collective memoir. Garland gets beyond the heroism of conventional war memoirs, revealing in eerie, present-tense immediacy the everyday lives of soldiers.
