"An enthralling, gripping account of the bloody battles, huge decisions, and historic personalities that culminated in the decision to drop the atomic bomb and brought the war in the Pacific to its climactic end. A masterful, meticulously researched work that captures the barbarity of the war waged by those who swore allegiance to the Japanese Emperor - and by those who crushed the military might of the Rising Sun." - General David H. Petraeus , commander of the surge in Iraq (2007-8) and coalition forces in Afghanistan (2010-2011)

    Synopsis
The powerful and riveting new book in the multimillion-selling Killing series by Bill O'Reilly and Martin Dugard Autumn 1944. World War II is nearly over in Europe but is escalating in the Pacific, where American soldiers face an opponent who will go to any length to avoid defeat. The Japanese army follows the samurai code of Bushido, stipulating that surrender is a form of dishonor. Killing the Rising Sun takes readers to the bloody tropical-island battlefields of Peleliu and Iwo Jima and to the embattled Philippines, where General Douglas MacArthur has made a triumphant return and is plotting a full-scale invasion of Japan. Across the globe in Los Alamos, New Mexico, Dr. J. Robert Oppenheimer and his team of scientists are preparing to test the deadliest weapon known to mankind. In Washington, DC, FDR dies in office and Harry Truman ascends to the presidency, only to face the most important political decision in history: whether to use that weapon. And in Tokyo, Emperor Hirohito, who is considered a deity by his subjects, refuses to surrender, despite a massive and mounting death toll. Told in the same page-turning style of Killing Lincoln , Killing Kennedy , Killing Jesus , Killing Patton , and Killing Reagan , this epic saga details the final moments of World War II like never before.

        Old Memories

I Remember the war with Japan and how cruel they were to our soldiers. My husband had 3 brothers in the war in the Pacific. One was a pilot and one was a bomadier. the other was in Germany. He also had a brother -in-law who was on the Burma Road for months. Came back home and was a nervous wreck. His hands shook all the time. He could no longer drive a car or work. These protesters today do not know what the soldiers went through in World War 2. They should read this book instead of protesting and support the president no matter WHO he is so we can get rid of the radicals from the far east. I am in my 80's and I think the world is going to ruins if the young people do not know about what went on years ago.

      • Accurate historical events

The book transports you to the time and places where our brave members of the US military were sent to fight a Japanese army famous for their brutality. The story of Desmond Doss (Hacksaw Ridge movie) is related again in the battles of Okinawa. The book brings your imagination to the battlefield where bullets fly and you need to duck as you read. Excellent book, the authors are obligated to be very faithful to the historical events, the names, the places, culminating in the defeat of the Japanese empire. The book is easy to read, highly recommended.

      • Historical Novel

One of the best novels written about Woral War II. It covers so many phases of activities going on all in one novel from medal winner to building the Greatest human killing weopans in that era. Very graphic with descriptions of the effect of dropping the atomic bomb in Japan. Tells more of why Truman removed MacArthur from command and why he chose not to seek re-election. To say I enjoyed the book is an understatement. It really is well written!!!

      • For WW2 history buffs

This book captures the history of the Japanese invasion and intent to rule Asia through violence and subjugation. The stories of brutality and extreme violence against prisoners of war, civilians, and people of the countries conquered are compelling and heart rendering. The determination of the Allies in reclaiming these countries and returning them to democracy is inspiring and forthright. The island by island invasions by the Americans and the thousands of young American men and women who died in the attempts is a stark reminder of the cost of freedom. The book was very well written and I enjoyed reading it immensely. I read it in two days page one to the finish.

      • A must read for historians

A very vivid and brutal depiction of the Japanese brutality to our armed forces that fought and died in that war, and a look at the quality and bravery of our brave soldiers, sailors, marines, and our gallant air force. They all served with honor and duty to their country. As a combat infantry veteran that fought in the Korean war I could relive some of their fears and sacrifices that this well written book depicts. It is another historical masterpiece by the authors, Bill O'Reilly and Martin Dugard.
