About this product

Product Information

It's a crazy story. In August 1964 a young Canadian who had already been a naval-officer and a professor took up residence with two men with intellectual disabilities in a little house in a French village. He called their new home L'Arche (the Ark). He had no plan, but felt he had to respond to the silent cry of these men, whom he had found shut up in a gloomy violent institution. His example was contagious; within months the community had grown to over fifty people, and today there are one hundred and fifty L'Arche communities on five continents. Anne-Sophie Constant paints a colorful portrait of this extraordinary man and the events that shaped him. She captures the essence of Jean Vanier's example and message, which continues to call us to reclaim our humanity, swim against the stream, and stand up for the dignity of every person. Book jacket.

Reviews
Vanier radiates the strength of a man who has fought his own inner battles and surfaced with peace....[He] continues to chip away at our fear of difference. --Maclean's, Constant, a close friend of Vanier and former lecturer at Conservatoire National des Arts et Métiers, has created a biography of lasting value. The work conveys the restless wandering and the solidity of conviction of a fully realized life. Vanier, a man of deep sincerity and integrity, is worth getting to know. Recommended for anyone interested in spiritual biographies and a life of service to humanity.-- Library Journal, In explaining Vanier's "crazy story" of coming to find freedom and joy in working with those who are severely disabled, Anne-Sophie Constant shows how his deep faith always guided him during more than a half-century leading L'Arche. From the intimate perspective of one of Vanier's closest confidantes, this brief biography paints a glowing, complex portrait of a remarkable life. -- Publishers Weekly, Jean Vanier's life's work is not a book - though he has written many - but a community, L'Arche, where the disabled are welcomed and treated as being of equal worth, perhaps greater worth, than their helpers. More philosophers should be that way, and certainly more theologians.-- The Guardian, Again and again, the decisions Vanier made were foolish in the eyes of the world. They always were directed towards those the world insists are weak. He was primed for a life of noble service in the military and diplomatic corps and squandered that to pray. He was primed for a life of virtuous study in the academy and squandered that to bathe people. In founding L'Arche, he did not intend to care for people with disabilities. He intended to live with them. The difference between those two positions is night and day. --Mere Orthodoxy, Every time one meets Jean Vanier, one has a sense of new horizons opening up, of a new vision opening before one's eyes of what it is to be human and of what it is to be in a community. --Justin Welby, Archbishop of Canterbury
