Beyond good and Awful
There are two kinds of people who read this book- those who have to for a class, and those who think they need to enrich their life, or broaden their horizons, etc. For those in the first category- Tough. At least you have a professor to help you out. For the rest of you- Skip it. At least this translation. (1909) There may be better ones out there, but really, you get a much better idea of what he was trying to say by reading the Wikipedia entry. That's what I did AFTER reading this piece of literature. The prologue of this book states that Nietzche only sold 146 copies of this book while he was alive. I guess that should have been a warning. Another red flag was that it was self-published. This book makes a good argument in favor of editors. It also may be instructive to ... It also may be instructive to consider that he was declared insane just three years after he wrote this. Just sayin' The two main problems with this book are the obscurity of the language. Yes, that's two. First of all, Nietzsche was a wordy bastard to begin with, they say he was very clever with the language. The German language, that is. A clever turn of the phrase often doesn't mean anything at all when translated. Also, this version of the book contains many UNtranslated phrases from french, latin, and other languages. Secondly, of course, this was translated over a hundred years ago, so many of the words the translator used aren't around anymore, or have different meanings. This is particularly problematic, because it may lead us to THINK we understand what he is saying, which is worse than knowing that we don't. For example: "The Spaniard who enjoys the sight of the faggot and stake." This quote could be easily misconstrued in the present day, especially if the reader also knows that Nietzsche also wrote "The Gay Science" (Its true.) So unless you want to spend a lot of time looking up "tartuffism" "philosophaster" and dozens of other words, often all in the same sentence, skip to the cliff notes. I know this work was the foundation of many new philosophies, but I gave it a low rating because of the unreadability. However, I did not give it the lowest rating possible, because I am saving the one stars in case I have to review something by James Joyce.

Fundamental Nietzsche
Beyond Good & Evil is fundamental Nietzsche. The basis for much of his philosophy. This is a great book that deserves to be read. It illuminates, educates, and helps us better understand the world we live in. It is books like this that help us understand the people that we are.
