About this product

Product Information

Look around and select a subject that you can see painted. That will paint itself. Do the obvious thing before you do the superhuman thing. It may have been accidental, but you knew enough to let this alone. The good painter is always making use of accidents. Never try to repeat a success. Swing a bigger brush -- you don't know what fun you are missing. For 31 years, Charles Hawthorne spoke in this manner to students of his famous Cape Cod School of Art. The essence of that instruction has been collected from students' notes and captured in this book, retaining the personal feeling and the sense of on-the-spot inspiration of the original classroom. Even though Hawthorne is addressing himself to specific problems in specific paintings, his comments are so revealing that they will be found applicable a hundred times to your own work. The book is divided into sections on the outdoor model, still life, landscape, the indoor model, and watercolor. Each section begins with a concise essay and continues with comments on basic elements: general character, color, form, seeing, posture, etc. It is in the matter of color that students will especially feel themselves in the presence of a master guide and critic. Hawthorne's ability to see color and, more important, to make the student see color, is a lesson that will aid student painters and anyone else interested in any phase of art. Although it does not pretend to be a comprehensive or closely ordered course, this book does have much to offer. It also represents the artistic insight of one of the finest painter-teachers of the twentieth century. "An excellent introduction for laymen and students alike." -- Time "To read these notes and comments ... is in itself an education. One cannot help but gain great help." -- School Arts

  • The Color Bible

Charles Hawthorne’s painting heritage goes back directly to Monet. Hawthorne founded the colorist school of art and taught the founder of the Cape Cod School, Henry Hensche, in person. This school directly dovetails with Cezanne’s approach to color which states that every change in form is a change in color. In this way “value” is not separate from color as a concept. Hawthorne’s approach gives the painter a uniquely pure and authentic way of seeing color and most importantly a way of painting light. The entire body of Hawthorne’s work studies the effect of light on color. This book is comprised of Hawthorne’s notes and critiques of his students. For anyone wanting a step-by-step approach or color photos of painting instructions, this will not be useful. The fact is that both of these ...

  • Pieces of Paint

Hawthorne had a way of describing his painting techniques to students and wanted them to nearly ignore the complexities of structure in favor of the surface phenomena. He wanted them to look almost exclusively at color - it's hue, value, intensity - in a very small local area on an object and find the right mixture that could sit as a "piece of color" in relation to other pieces that ultimately formed the objects and the painting as a whole. Because he didn't write this little book means that his wife, in this case, was remembering his words and offered them up as a "how-to" book. Another book of this kind, Kimon Nicolaides' "The Natural Way to Draw", was a compilation of student memories and it too falls short on depth and/or reasons why the directions were given to students. That ...

  • Very disapointing.

From books by his students and their high praise of Hawthorne's painting style, I expected this book to be instructional -- like a course in painting. Instead it is merely a collection of his critiques of students' works without the benefit of images of the works. There are no illustrations and without that the book has little value to a student of painting.

  • Nice light read

Not super in depth, but a entertaining and thoughtful quick read. Easy to tuck into a bag and take with you. A sometimes funny, informative, and philosophical side of plein air painting. This provides an interesting perspective from someone who doesn’t hold a mainstream view of what plein air painters should focus on. Instead of drawing and accuracy, Hawthorne really only wants his students to focus on color. The rest takes care of itself if you get the color correct.

  • Great for the Impressionist painter

Excellent and easy read from one of the great impressionist painters. Lots of quotes, guidance, critiques of his students' works that will benefit any serious painter wanting to improve his/ her artist's eye and technique.
