About this product

Product Information

In Robert Aldrich's THE FLIGHT OF THE PHOENIX, based on Elleston Trevor's novel, a small plane carrying oil workers and military personnel crashes, stranding a group of survivors in the Sahara Desert. As the lethal heat and grating sand begin to take a toll on the group, the conscientious pilot, Frank Towns (James Stewart), struggles with his inability to lead the party to safety. Hope arises, however, when German aircraft designer Heinrich Dorfman (Hardy Kruger) begins to theorize about rebuilding the wreckage into a single-engine plane capable of lifting the crash victims to safety.Aldrich (KISS ME DEADLY) opens his film with the pulsating tension (intercut with the opening credits) of Towns trying and cataclysmically failing to pilot his aircraft through a sandstorm, and from there the white-knuckle intensity never lets up. Boasting an intriguing cast--headed up by Stewart with a poignantly ragged-edged, heartfelt portrayal--and a taut story line, THE FLIGHT OF THE PHOENIX is a powerful and psychologically penetrating thriller.

    Character-driven survival ckassuc

This classic film, remade but impossible to update or improve, assembles a superb cast in a unique survival drama. A plane downed in the desert strands an odd collection of men (yes, all men) who must struggle to hope for an impossible chance of rescue. The plot turns on brains as well as endurance, with a stunning twist to challenge their and our belief. Resist spoilers, transport your mind to a lower-tech era, and let the characters (and amazing portrayals) carry you into their crisis. This classic film was a family favorite for decades. In older days with no videos, few TV channels, and pre-set weekly schedules, we’d suddenly discover this gem in the TV listings! At that point, even the teenagers in the household would cancel plans in order to watch the movie with my parents. James ...

  • The original classic of desert survival

A simple story: after a plane crashes in the African desert, a group of survivors decide they must rescue themselves by building a new plane from the wreckage of the old. Jimmy Stewart does well in a less-likable role than he usually plays, as the cynical pilot who thinks they're wasting their time, but appreciates the need to keep hope alive. To my mind, the cast does a slightly better job than that of the recent Dennis Quaid remake, but this movie does suffer a bit from the lack of special effects in a couple of scenes: the crash itself is depicted in an annoying freeze-frame fashion over the opening credits, and the Phoenix's landing takes place conveniently behind a hill (wheels it shouldn't have are also clearly visible during its takeoff.) But still, this is an ...

  • Great Drama

I like both this original and the remake. This one has great dramatic interaction between characters. There are many famous actors, including Ernest Borgnine and George Kennedy. The remake tops it in gripping music, but this one has better drama.

  • Great DVD!

The Flight of the Phoenix is a very well planned, dramatic story brought to life on film. James Stewart is one of my favorite actors. The supporting cast made the film a true, unbeatable gem.

  • Great all-around

What makes this movie especially great is that despite the relatively simple plot/storyline, the acting and pacing is superb. Each actor portrays his character to the utmost, never a boring moment. I don't know why they remade it recently, as it couldn't have been done better than this. The only negative for me was the common movie mistake of wrapping up the climax/ending a little too quickly. I suppose feature-length films need to be a certain length.
