About this product

Product Information

Sean Penn gives yet another remarkable performance as troubled soul Sam Bicke in Niels Mueller's debut feature film, THE ASSASSINATION OF RICHARD NIXON. As the Watergate scandal is breaking and President Nixon can be seen all over the television and newspapers, Bicke struggles to earn money as an office furniture salesman as he tries to win back his estranged wife, Marie (a brunette Naomi Watts). He has grand plans of starting a mobile tire store with his friend Bonny (Don Cheadle), but he is so blinded by truth and honesty that he stands in the way of his own potential success. His rage continues to build as he sees another man spending time with Marie and the kids until he cannot control it any longer and resolves to kill Nixon, whom he blames for all of society's ills. Mueller, who cowrote the script with Kevin Kennedy, tells the story in a series of flashbacks as Bicke dictates into a tape recorder the sad details of his life to composer Leonard Bernstein, the only person he thinks will understand him. Penn immerses himself in this difficult, challenging role, playing a simple man on the verge of exploding. From the way he covets his mustache to how he reacts when he's around Marie, Penn embodies Bicke, who sees himself as representative of the loss of the American dream. Based on true events, the film also deals with the racism and sexism that was rampant in the early-to-mid-1970s.

  • Excellent Acting and story-line about true life events

Sean Penn has played many different roles before. This role was quite very the most believable role I've seen him play in years that fit his demeanor to a tea. Although Byck was born to poor Jewish parents in South Philadelphia, Byck dropped out of high school in the ninth grade in order to support his impoverished family. He enlisted in the US Army in 1954, was honorably discharged in 1956, married shortly thereafter, and had four children. In 1972, Byck began to suffer from severe bouts of depression after his wife divorced him and after experiencing many business failures. Due to his depression, he admitted himself to a psychiatric ward where he stayed for two months. Byck began to harbor the belief that the government was conspiring to oppress the poor. In the film Sam Byck ...

  • Ouch!

I bought this movie for a friend who loves films about sadness, pain, and darkness. Sean Penn's character in this film is the epitome of all of that. This movie starts off painful and then becomes more painful. And then after that, it's gets even more painful. Sean Penn is brilliant. He had me embarrassed for him so many times I lost count. If you're looking for something joyful, you've found the wrong film.

  • The Assassination of Richard Nixon

Sam Bicke wanted everyone to remember how he changed the world by proving that one small grain of sand can rise up against the machinations of the world. Instead he is but a footnote in history, relegated to trivia questions nobody knows the answer to and this film, The Assassination of Richard Nixon.
