  • Well-Written, Meticulously Researched

David C. Douglas wrote a very informative, and meticulously researched account of the life of William the Conqueror. Although it was written over 40 years ago, and is written more on a scholarly level than for the general reader, this tome outshines any of the other biographies I have read concerning William's life. While other biographies deal with a lot of conjecture and are short on concrete evidence, Douglas has done a ton of research to support this biography, and William is one of my favorite people to study from the Medieval Period, so I have read quite a few. After reading this book, I believe that it is very probable that William the Conqueror was promised the English crown by his cousin, Edward the Confessor, since Douglas' evidence logically leads the reader to this conclusion.
