A Newfound Classic!
I love this animation! Not only is it visually fantastic, Oshii Mamoru really did a great job capturing the feelings of story. This is by no means a fast pace anime like GITS was. It is a much slower much calmer approach that allows you to "feel" your way into the feelings of humanity's sad and feeble helplessness. The story takes place on an alternate historical timeline where wars are now no more than mock representations with the purpose keeping the peace for the citizens of the world. Live-fire Dogfights between kid pilots are the kind of nameless, faceless athletes within this mock theater. This anime takes you on a visually stunning ride, that can really touch deep if you give it a chance. Again this isn't an action packed shoot-em-up like Oshii Mamoru's earlier work, but does ... Incredible sci-fi by Master Oshii
I find myself rewatching this dvd because of the wonderful aircraft cgi and the depth of the storyline. Consider: cigarettes keep the Kindren young; The Sanka fighter is based on a German secret weapon aircraft; are Kindren immortal? The six engine heavy bomber is strangely beyond the design of all other craft. The lowered vertical stablizer also harks back to the Nazi Amerika Bomber design competition. But with kudos to Mamoro Oshii and his designers. I recommend viewing the extra features! Beautiful images with no endearing or challenging characterization.
I bought this based upon seeing pieces of it on multiple screens at the nearby BJ's wholesale club having not had any experience with Japanese animated films as an adult. My interest in aviation was gratified by the images created herein; however, the characters flying in, working on, or related to the aircraft are all flat, depressing personalities with few, if any, redeeming qualities.
