About this product

Product Information

"Interesting investigation and straightforward handling of sensational times and tricksters, of the cult of voodooism in all its manifestations. From its first known appearances in New Orleans of 200 years ago, here are the fetishes and formulae, the rites and dances, the cures, charms and gris-gris. Here were the witch-doctors and queens, and in particular a Doctor John who acquired fame and fortune, and Marie Laveau, who with her daughter dominated the weird underworld of voodoo for nearly a century." -Kirkus Reviews "Robert Tallant speaks with authority." -The New York Times "Much nonsense has been written about voodoo in New Orleans. . .here is a truthful and definitive picture." -Lyle Saxton Originally published in 1946, Voodoo In New Orleans examines the origins of the cult voodooism. The lives of New Orleans's most infamous witch doctors and voodoo queens have been re-created in this well-researched account of New Orleans's dark underworld.

  • Voo Doo in New Orleans is a Winner

Tallant takes you right back into previous centuries to the days of voo doo ridden Old New Orleans. The book is filled with a realistic rendering of how it really was...all the old "hoo doos" and witch doctors come alive with their special recipes for love, money, even death. The way it is written, you can almost feel like you are sitting there in St. Ann Street in voo doo queen, the powerful Marie Laveau's parlor with her fifteen children and common law husband, Christophe Glapion, and her snake in the next room, with her love powders and potions, gris gris to keep enemies away, and candles festooning the residence. You feel her dark flashing eyes on you, her head tossed back into a raucous and disturbing laugh. You can almost hear the ruffle of her long dresses, the jingle of her big ...

  • A decent read for the average price

A decent enough book if you take everything with a grain of salt. Having grown up in New Orleans nothing in this book was especially new information but it does seem to have a well researched timeline of the movers and shakers of the Voodoo community up until it's publication in the early 40's. It is very sensationalistic and disjointed at times, but it's worth the time and effort to read if you just want a cursory glance of New Orleans voodoo.

  • Compelling

I read this book when it was published in 1980. Great Reading it all over again. Thank You.
