About this product

Product Information

NATIONAL BOOK AWARD WINNER - The Pulitzer Prize-winning author of American Pastoral delivers his "richest, most rewarding novel" ( The New York Times Book Review ) about Micky Sabbath, a scandalous hero who embarks on a turbulent journey into his past. Once an inventive puppeteer, Sabbath at sixty-four is still defiantly antagonistic and exceedingly libidinous. But after the death of his long-time mistress--an erotic free spirit whose adulterous daring surpassed even his own--Sabbath, bereft and grieving and besieged by the ghosts of those who loved and hated him most, contrives a succession of farcical disasters that take him to the brink of madness and extinction.

  • Roth Writes Audacious, Sexual, Literary, and Funny

When you finally get the courage to pick up a copy of Philip Roth's comic novel, "Sabbath's Theater," you'd better bring an air-sickness bag. Written like a modern-day Shakespearean tragedy, the constant sexual and psychological twists and turns, the ceaseless inner dialogue, provide an intelligent combination of wit and heat not seen in most contemporary write-by-the-numbers novels. Roth's main character, Morris "Mickey" Sabbath is a 64-year-old puppeteer who defines the term "anti-hero. Sabbath is depraved, charismatic, hyper-intelligent, a quintessential performer whose professional career is cut short by arthritis. After his first wife dies a mysterious death, his 13 year partner in adultery dies of cancer, his wife of over 30 years enters AA, he still searches for one final sexual ...

  • Sabbath’s Theater by Philip Roth

This Philip Roth’s book is completely captivating and mind altering. I was fascinated by the unique writing style used to unfold the telling of one man’s life. Sabbath is an Artist who has a distinct personality of a man who is self obsessed and lacks empathy. Some how Roth makes his main character self absorbed yet understandably human. The character development is very full of twists and turns. Great read!
