What's the Point?
If you want a thoughtful video peek into the heart of the 60s student protest movement, you might want to skip this one. If, on the other hand, you already know as much as you want to about the hippie counterculture, this movie is a hoot! The brainchild of one of the most overrated directors of all time, this flick is what the 60s would be like if the South Park producers used "real" actors to portray this turbulent period. To say that the soundtrack (featuring Pink Floyd) is the best part of this movie is not meant to take anything away from the film itself. If you want a cartoonish version of radical 60s featuring nothing but shallow stereotypes and over the top dramatic sequences, this one is a laugh riot! Why did I buy this item? And this is a "serious" film, not an intentional parody of itself. The Director actually thinks he is making a statement with this cinematic monstousity and that&apos;s what makes this so fun. This is where we learn to laugh at ourselves. Did I forget to mention that there is plenty of nudity and an unbelievable (in the literal sense) desert orgy scene at the end. You will think me for spoiling the ending. If you are now or have ever been "groovy", this film is for you!

Watch "Zabriskie Point" for the film not the soundtrack
"Zabriskie Point reflects an outsider's (Antonioni is an Italian director) almost idealized vision of what the American 1960s was about politically, culturally and socially. This idealization is reflected by the almost cliche' handling of various issues that were prevalent in the era in which it was filmed. The film's political theme is expressed by the actions of the student radicals. The film opens with a classroom filled with student activists of different ethnic groups. The theme of the meeting pertains to racial and political struggles. The lead character walks out of the meeting because he believes that meetings are dull. This character obviously reflects a more radical element in the activist scene during the 60s (Weatherman influence?) because he purchases a hand gun for ... "Zabriskie Point reflects an outsider's (Antonioni is an Italian director) almost idealized vision of what the American 1960s was about politically, culturally and socially. Actions can speak louder than words. The police brutality against the student radicals in the film leads to the male lead getting accused of killing a police officer, stealing a small airplane and flying out to the desert to hide and think. As in most films by Antonioni it is ambiguous as to whether the lead character shoots the officer or not, although it does not appear to the viewer that he does. The actual gunman is never revealed in the film. A viewer could make the case that the police brutality in the film reflects the social problem of police brutality in the 1960s. (Kent State) The film ends with the most violent form of police brutality as the lead character is gunned down without even being given a chance to surrender. The very end of the film contains the female lead's fantasy of buildings and material wealth exploding into rubble when she finds out on her car radio that the male lead has been shot to death. She wanted to run away with the male lead but the male lead is more of a youthful hero then a dark, anti-hero and chooses to fly back to L.A. and face the consequences of his actions. The female lead is in the desert on behalf of a land developer and represents a young person from the 60s that is trying to grow beyond the material and move into spiritual planes. Her fantasies of material destruction are the result of a rage that is created by a society that destroys what is beautiful in the pursuit of money. The cultural aspects of "Zabriskie Point" are reflected in the film's pop soundtrack that features music by the experimental, British, rock group; Pink Floyd. This music is especially effective during the explosive scene. The cultural element most important to the film is the idea of "free love." This free love aspect is explored in a long scene in the desert outside L.A. involving the two main characters. The interesting thing is that the film flashes to many different couples in the same location, expressing love in many different ways. This form of character transposition gives "Zabriskie Point" a psychedelic edge that you would expect from an experimental director such as Antonioni. The scene is entertaining, mild erotica that still retains a sense of playful romance. In summation the film seems like an outsiders interpretation about what the 60s were about. The acting isn't the best but the film has a decent entertainment factor due to the interesting soundtrack, excellent film techniques and historical significance. I recommend this film to film or history students more than to the casual viewer. This film is an original experience and I will certainly watch it more than once.

As a story, it's severely lacking, as most "art" films are. There's a reason they don't show this movie on network television, other than the extensive orgy scene in the desert, and now I know why. It's mostly a very dull teenage boy fantasy type of story and it is confined in that it has very little action or discernable plot. If you're a collector, as I am, then by all means get a copy. I expected the worst, and I got it!
This is one of the dumbest movies of all time. STOP. It is the dumbest movie of all time. I read the reviews and they are bad, but I tried it anyway, and it was worse than the reviews. Bizarre, plotless, superficial, mind-numbingly stupid. Wow!
