Slice of film history with a good bonus feature.
The remastering makes the picture look quite good, although the 16mm footage (predominantly the Mardi Gras portion) remains at a lower resolution which is to be expected. My feeling is it is appropriate that footage be a bit on the grainy side due to the nature of what is being presented. It works. I appreciated the bonus feature "Shaking the Cage" as it provided additional insight I was only vaguely aware of before viewing. Easy Rider's place in film history is secure, but the story line itself has not aged well for me. I remember seeing the film for the first time at it's release and being moved by it. Chalk it up to being a 17 year old - or perhaps the distance from the social issues - but whatever you may attribute the change to, it no longer moves me in the way it did in 1969. In ... In the STC feature Hopper mentions that there were no films being made that truly reflected the youth culture at the time which is somewhat true. As far as if it's worth owning, perhaps for the truly committed fan. Is it worth seeing, yes, if only for getting a feel for what this film accomplished - especially when compared to the other films released at this same time.

This was a landmark movie of the 1970's. It was the time of Flower Power, the Hippie Generation. Tattoos, choppers, weed, and free love was the talk of the nation. A whole new era in music and film was being ushered in, and a whole new crop of directors with new ideas was starting to make their mark on motion pictures. Dennis Hopper was one of those new directors and had a profound effect on this film. Wyatt (Fonda) and Billy (Hopper) are fat with drug money and on their custom chopped motorcycles, are heading across the country to "Discover America". They are heading to New Orleans, to the Mardi Gras, and the best whorehouse in the south. Riding and performing as Captain America and Billy they travel to a Hippie commune in Arizona, and are temporarily jailed in Texas until ... This was a landmark movie of the 1970's.
