About this product

Product Information

This coming-of-age classic and the bestselling Chicano novel of all time follows a young boy as he questions his faith and beliefs -- now one of PBS's "100 Great American Reads." Antonio Marez is six years old when Ultima comes to stay with his family in New Mexico. She is a curandera, one who cures with herbs and magic. Under her wise wing, Tony will probe the family ties that bind and rend him, and he will discover himself in the magical secrets of the pagan past--a mythic legacy as palpable as the Catholicism of Latin America. And at each life turn there is Ultima, who delivered Tony into the world...and will nurture the birth of his soul. The winner of the 2015 National Humanities Medal, Rudolfo Anaya is acclaimed as the father of Chicano literature in English and for his rich and compassionate writing about the Mexican-American experience.

Required Reading in 6th Grade, and Still Such an Incredible Book. 3

Arrived in perfect shape. Even better condition than expected. I had been looking for a copy with this cover for sentimental reasons, so it means a lot to me to have this.

  • Bless Me Ultima has some Spanish in it!

A coming of age story (Young lad in 1940's New Mexico, USA) that has some Spanish untranslated throughout it. Nowhere did I read this in the couple of reviews I did see prior to purchasing this book. ... If you do not know Spanish be prepared to use a Spanish-English Dictionary or an online translator as you read this. That is unless every time you hit those pesky words/lines you either want to just skip over them hoping they are non-essential to the story or call a friend that does speak and understand Spanish. If you do decide to call a friend be sure to put them on your cell phone's frequent call plan.

  • Bless Me, Ultima

Bless me Ultima was my favorite book many years ago. When I heard a movie was filmed in NM of this book, I purchased a copy on E-bay and read it again. It is a fabulous book for those who are interested in curanderas and also the life in New Mexico beginning in the 1940's. The writing is rich in New Mexican Spanish vocabulary, and one can visualize the people, landscapes, and pueblos of this era.
